Book overview

Kristin Bjornsen lived a normal life, right up until the day the spaceships floated into view above Denver. As human slaves were herded into the maw of a massive vessel, Kristin realized her normal life was over and her fight for freedom was just beginning…

The alien Catteni value strength and intelligence in their slaves—and Kristin has managed to survive her enslavement while hundreds of other humans have not. But her trial has just begun, for now she finds herself part of a massive experiment. The aliens have discovered a new world, and they have a simple way of finding out if it’s habitable: drop hundreds of slaves on the surface and see what happens.

If they survive, colonization can begin. If not, there are always more slaves.

If you aren't too constrained by your thoughts that humans are 100% better than other totally imaginary species, this book is a delightful, imaginative thought experiment about what could happen if earth got invaded and humans were taken as prisoners.
They face challenges, and do, with a little help from their non-human friends, come out alright. So, if you want a feel-good read, and you like sci-fi-fantasy, this could be for you.

If you are strongly biased that humans are the best/highest/smartest/most worthy species in the Universe(s), this book is not for you.

I like a lot of Anne McCaffrey's works, and I think no one writes a better female protagonist than she does. Freedom's Landing is the first in the Freedom Series, but it's a bit confusing to me because years ago, the book seemed to be different or there was another book (was it Thorns of Barevi?) where Kristen, the main character, experienced the Catteni invasion of Denver. Apparently the series was re-written, but information about the Catteni I read years ago was missing (there was a lot of sex in the original, apparently written out, and more about the original invasion.) This book deals with a renegade Emassi (noble) Catteni and Kristen landing on a colonization planet and, with other kidnapped humans and aliens, surviving and creating a new society. Apparently, the Catteni seed new worlds with kidnapped "colonists" and take over planets with the survivors.

Despite my confusion at the story having changed, I soon got into the novel and enjoyed the development of technology and survival techniques by the various survivors. Some of it was a bit farfetched (they were able to create walkie-talkies from scrapped automated farm equipment) but over all, it was a fast-moving and exciting tale. It reminds me a bit of Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" mixed with "Tunnel in the Sky".

McCaffrey wrote many great series. I'm indifferent to the Dragon series, but love her Crystal Singer books and this series is almost as good. If you like action in sci-fi, you'll enjoy this

This is the first in a 4 book series. Basically, the Cattani tried to overawe Earth by taking several million (apparently) slaves randomly. Many of them are getting dumped on a planet---the Cattani way to see if the planet can be colonized. Dump a bunch on it---give them the barest essential tools---a knife a hatchet food rational for a while but not much else. If they live voilà!! Instant colony.

Of course there are jokers in the deck--and the planet may already be owned. I won't give much away---but as a start, it's solid.

I do find it a bit incredible that, even with maybe 1,500 people including *EARTH* specialists in botany, various sciences etc, how quickly things like pottery cutlery and other 'modern' amenities are developed for all---but I suppose it could be.

Short review---it's worth what I paid, and if I can get them cheaply I'd read the rest of the series..... Will these books be required reading in 100 years? Hell no ! but they'll be fun reads for today

I believe this book was first published in 1995. Reading it, I was reminded at various times of James Dashner's Maze Runner, TV's "The Dome" and Lindsay Buroker's Fallen Empire Series. It was interesting and held my attention. A few minor negatives... (1) The things Kris said were sometimes hokey/dated. (2) I couldn't quite fathom why Kris was so loyal to Zainal so quickly, especially after what he said that caused her to knock him out and try to get rid of him. It seemed like she should be more wary. (3) The progress made by the settlers was incredibly rapid and almost cutesy sometimes.

I'm not sure I will continue with this series after reading reviews of the next three books. But, I do not feel like the first book was a waste of time. I highly recommend Lindsey Buroker's books to those who enjoyed this book and the main character Kris.
