Book overview

Abducted by the alien Catteni, Kristin Bjornsen was one of many humans brought to the planet Botany as part of an experiment to see if it could support life. Enslaved and forced to colonize a world not their own, the settlers have accepted Botany as their home—a home worth fighting for…

Kristin’s people have learned that the aliens responsible for their imprisonment are merely mercenaries, subjugated by the parasitic Eosi Race, and that Botany is being farmed remotely by some unknown species—a species that may be sympathetic to the colonists’ struggle for freedom.

The “Farmers” refuse to join the humans in their rebellion against the Catteni, but they agree to use their technological skills to shield Botany and hide it from its enemies—buying Kristin and the settlers time to build up their forces and liberate their world…

This review is strictly for the audio books as most people will read the books first and then buy the audio book as a supplement. I first bought the Freedom series on cassette tapes (yes, I AM that old) and just fell in love with the acting of the two performers; Susie Breck and Dick Hill. They are just absolutely stunning with their vocal talents and help bring Anne McCaffrey's stories to brilliant life. I love audio books. They help pass the time when travelling long-distance in my car, make the walk with the dog not so boring, and help me survive traffic without resorting to road-rage.

As anyone who has ever read an Ann McCaffrey story knows, she is just brilliant in bringing her fantasy worlds to life; so much so, that you have to keep reminding yourself that there are no such things as Catteni, Earth has never been attacked by aliens, and (for the Pern series) that there are NO dragons. She has a true gift with her different worlds she creates and it makes each book pure escapism.

Susie Breck and Dick Hill have truly ruined me on just one actor taking on numerous characters. They each have such distinct voices for each character, that you don't need the "Zainal said," and "Kris said," to clarify. They help bring the words they perform to vivid life and you just get lost in the story and forget you're being "read" too.

If you have any doubts about any book performed by these two actors, don't hesitate. They help the super talent author bring her stories to life.

I have re-read this book series so many times. I introduced my son to this author when he was a teenager and he is also a fan. This story line is attention holding, clean, and its language is not embarrassing.

Loved the classic tale of the downtrodden, the enslaved, with a twist: aliens!
Then they were loaded in lots if they were rebellious and transferred to a new 'uninhabited' planet. Uninhabited yes, but not unclaimed. Another alien species, unknown of by their captors, had been farming this planet for a very long time.
They were able to survive, organize into a community, and plan their revenge & hopefully free Earth - if they could get the unknown aliens to help.
This book is past the survival stage & the community stage. Then they meet who they've called the Farmers. They get protection from their captors, but no help to get Earth & other conquered planets freed. They continue to plan and don't give up hope of convincing the Farmers. The rest I leave to you. Read the first book before this one to see how they were "dropped" on the uninhabited planet & survive & flourish.

Anne McCaffrey has created another world to explore and share with those of us who appreciate her imaginative writing. Botony, a world that has become the dumping ground for the dispossessed of several solar systems, and who, when they are transported in a drugged state to Botony are expected to create a colony eventually retaken by those who dumped them once the colony thrives, is a place where humankind and slaves of other species must find common ground to work together to survive. The best and worst characteristics of sentient beings are revealed. The ancient Greek, Solon, would be proud that they find that common ground in their desire for freedom; to be free and independent; to explore this new world, using the available resources wisely without the curse of bureaucracy; each person having respect for others deserving that respect; and everyone banding together for the protection of everyone else. The antagonist Eosians are far superior in intelligence to humans, but cruel and arrogant in their belief that they are the superior beings in the universe, while the protective "Farmers" provide the buffer necessary for the colony to survive without interfering, yet letting it be known that they "dislike" injury to any sentient species. I can't wait to read the second book in this series!
