I have written fiction and non fiction all of my life, and worked as a middle manager for some of the largest corporations in the world—usually managing technical editors—and small ones, too, as sales manager for capital equipment in technical applications. I thrived in the corporate environment. Even when the environment is hostile, it’s all ‘grist for the mill.’

Along the way I was nominated for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer of a professional novel in science fiction or fantasy, collaborated with Connie Willis on three novels that have found favor among young adults as well as adults, awarded Best Paper by the Society for Technical Communication, and written many solo novels of science fiction, suspense, as well as short stories, and articles. My husband and I raised our family, did a lot of cooking—our boys learned their way around the kitchen early in life— and sharing of recipes in a fashion that continues into the next generation—“Hey, Mom, what temperature for the pork shoulder…”—but so far no cook book.

Maybe it was just the right book at the right time in my life, but this book struck just the perfect chord with me. So what if you can smell the happy ending a mile away? I for one was content to relax in the capable hands of two skilled authors and let the story take me there. This wasn't what my mother would refer to as a "deep" book, but I read books for all kinds of reasons, not least of which is plain and simple enjoyment. The characters are interesting and develop in complexity as the main character grows to know them better. For all that the storyline is relatively straightforward, it's still complex enough to keep me going and surprise me now and then. I love this book. It even passed that most difficult of all tests: the re-read.

This is a book about a young woman who returns to her home planet after her mother dies. Her intention is to pick up her inheritance and then leave as soon as possible. Her whole attitude towards "her" planet is based on the very negative letters her mother sent while she is in school on another planet. Because of legal complications she has to stay on the planet for awhile and traveling towards Milleflores, the farm that is her inheritance, she slowly begins to look at the planet and the people in a different way. And when she finally arrives at Milleflores she begins to realize (she finds her mothers diaries) what her schooling has done to the other owners of Milleflores. Once she is on Milleflores she starts doing everything that needs to be done around the place without being asked to do so showing that she is not the spoiled person that she seems to be at the start of the book, but a person in her own right. I originally borrowed this book from the library and after having read it a number of times I finally bought it for my Kindle.

Not up to Connie Willis standard

Do not buy this book expecting Connie Willis's usual humor or occasional real drama (the Doomsday Book.)
. The protagonist is unlikable and the story drags.

I picked this up because of Willis' other works, like "Doomsday Book" and "To Say Nothing of the Dog," so I was a little disappointed for the first few chapters when it seemed like it was going to be a typical romance. But, I kept reading since it was Connie Willis and I wondered if it was going to go somewhere other than the standard romance plot line. Plus, I was worried about Cleo and wanted to be sure she'd be OK (I had my suspicions on what was going to happen and was right, but won't include any spoilers). I'm glad I kept going. It does follow the expected love story line, but it also doesn't. And, it's just charming and sweet.

If you're looking for a light read, not heavy-handed on the romance (no sex if that matters to you), with a bit of a sci fi twist and a bit of a western/homesteader twist, plus critters (always a plus!), check it out.

Note about the Kindle version: it has some errors that must have been introduced when converted to digital (and no one bothered to actually proofread it). The funniest is every time the word is supposed to be 'corner' it has 'comer' and once it had the reverse error where 'rn' replaced the 'm' in a word. But, it's not enough to impact the enjoyment.

I love Connie Willis, but this book is terrible, not just by Willis standards, but by any standard. There are no characters, only caricatures: every man (except one) is an ignorant, oafish misogynist. The one exception is supposed to be the local lady-killer, but he actually comes across as a leering stalker. The "heroine" is a money-grabbing bigot, and the plot is so tortuously contrived that it's completely unbelievable. I struggled on until the Kindle told me I'd read 16%, then I gave up.
