Some very interesting insights about advancing your self interest

This book has some actionable insight from an author with what sounds like real world experience to try to maximize your efforts towards your business aims in life. Like all opinions, they're subjective, and keep in mind this man lived in a generation in which in 2022, there are more laws and such related to technology that govern relationships, public equity, etc as well, and if it's not obvious, you don't have very much negotiating leverage as an employee vs. where companies actually needed workers back in the day. Today, companies have so much money, they can afford to seek out the best talent. Very few actually have the leverage to actually negotiate. But in terms of rationality, this is a great book.

GET THE ORIGINAL VERSION! (New Version is highly abridged)

I absolutely love the original version. Its reminds me of the good old days when authors weren't afraid to speak their mind. It's a crash course on Human Nature and delves into day to day scenarios which we can all relate to. That book has literally helped me more than any other in that respect. The old version is also more cut-throat and uses unapologetic language. Ringer speaks his mind and calls it like it is. He also elaborates with many interesting stories that make his points more digestible.
I cannot recommend the new version. It is more than 100 pages shorter (yes 100!) and therefore highly abridged (See Pictures). The tone is much softer and more politically correct and it is also missing the majority of the stories. Because if this the message isn't transcended in the same way. It is basically a totally different book and therefore I cannot recommend it. Disappointed with Robert Ringer about this. Anyway, get the Original version which is ISBN: 9780308103344

A Poor Man's Rational Egoism and a Poorer Man's Sales Guide

Ringer has a curious outlook for a self help/"sales" book - he's an unabashed rational egoist. In everyday terms, the fellow has read Atlas Shrugged a few times too many. He proceeds to apply this libertarian viewpoint to the realm of sales in-between mildly funny rants about a predatory government. And that's all well and good, even if I don't agree with his politics. The problem is that the book is ultimately disappointing because it's thin on content and won't help you sell much of anything. It's mildly amusing, nonetheless, because of rather humorous cartoons and the author's style, but not amusing enough to justify a purchase. The few insights regarding "transaction costs" are largely borrowed from better Transactional Psychology books.

Instead, I'd recommend reading Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials) for a great and empirically proven selection of sales persuasion techniques.

Other similar books that may be of interest: The Ego and His Own: The Case of the Individual Against Authority (Dover Books on Western Philosophy) if you want a libertarian philosophy book, read The Dilbert Principle: A Cubicle's-Eye View of Bosses, Meetings, Management Fads & Other Workplace Afflictions if you want an amusing (and example-filled) book on business, Ogilvy on Advertising for ad sales and marketing, or Putt's Law and the Successful Technocrat: How to Win in the Information Age if you want an amusing book on the tech sector or go with Games People Play: The Basic Handbook of Transactional Analysis. for a transactional psych book.

@ the risk of showing my age, I read Winning... I clearly remember getting the hard cover the week Looking... came out. I laughed, I cried. That was decades ago.

I agree that he can sound a little harsh. Sometimes ya gotta use a 2x4 to get the mule's attention. He got mine as a young man. I was working on a article which had me thinking about the priciples Ringer laid out... Even with decades of time passed, I can still recall the scene where bankrupt he was driving the rented U Haul with all of what he had left and driving past the beach.

The theory of sameness and what are you offering that you cannot find in 999 other people hit a nerve. It gave me the courage to be me, and not what others wanted me to be. (Relates well to the slaps in the face for one in the sack another reviewer mentioned).

Honestly I didn't know the book was re-issued. I'm delighted I can have a link from Amazon to send readers of my article.

looking out for #1

This is a really great book to get a different realistic viewpoint on my different everyday events. I have read this book 3 times. First when I was 23 years old, and my husband recommended it to me. It was hard to comprehend, but I read it again when I was 30 years old and totally understood it. Loved it and refer to it many times. When my husband passed away in 2005, I felt my life was off kilter and needed to find center, so I picked up this book again. This was the best thing I could have done. I love his writings, and laugh though out this book. Looking out for #1 is a vantastic book to read, but if you do not understand the point he is trying to make, read it again, and ponder on it. Open your eyes and your mind, then decide for your self what YOU want to believe. His point of view or the one that society tell us what we should believe. I have recommended this book to soo many friends.

It is funny, uplifting

This is a book everyone should read. I was in my 40s when I read it the first time. It changed my life. I just sent this book to my 16 year old grandson, after asking his parents if it was OK. I have picked it up in used book stores every time I see it and give it to as many people as I can, recently downloaded to my Kindle too. The book is about a Turtle jumping the hurdles of life. It is funny, uplifting, and teaches that you don't have to conform to everyone else. It is written in short life lessons and very easy to read. Teaches you it's OK to be yourself, none of us are alike and that's OK.

Robert Ringer is a writer who has studied Ayn Rand and Objectivism and has always put great stock in both. He is a libertarian and a free thinker. He believes in individualism.

When I first read this book some three decades ago I didn't know about Rand or Objectivism or really much about libertarians, with the capital L or without.

So re-reading it and now knowing about all of the above I enjoyed it even more than the first time and I believe strongly in everything he wrote.

I read a reviewer who said that it is not relevant today as we work in teams. We don't all work in teams. Most of us do not. And even if we do it has nothing at all to do with the fact we must look out for ourselves first.

This is a great book for anyone. It is as good today as it was thirty years ago.

This book is amazing. Very well written planned out and explanatory. It does not say that any one opinion is right or wrong it just gives the very intellectual wisdom that he has and you can run with it or spit on it. Very motivational and eye opening. I would recommend this book to anyone but mostly to adolescents anywhere from 15-30 especially 20's. It helps understanding of choice making and things that are most important and the importance of not feeling guilt for things that aren't your fault. This book covers intelligence in all areas of life including politics, general life, expenses, families, relationships, employment and professionalism. There's a lot of great stuff in this book, practical and relevant information that can help you stay focused on what's really important in life and on what it takes to succeed. I wish I had read it 20 years ago. I do wish the aurthor had kept his political views to himself though. His naive and idealistic anti-government views lower his credibility a notch or two which was a little disappointing. I still recommend it though and plan on reading it again.
