The listing calls this book "Elegant French Fashions of the Nineteenth Century" but that is NOT the name of the book the listing's ISBN number points to: the book you get is ACTUALLY called "La Mode Illustrée: Fashion Plates in Full Color." This book would be MORE ACCURATELY titled "La Mode Illustrée: Fashion Plates from 1886."
If you're here for fashion plates in a book that is not even a 1/4in thick, with 32 individual leaves including the title page and forward, and with a narrow scope between precisely January 1886 and December 1886, with large sharp fashion plates in full color, this is the book for you.
If you don't particularly enjoy 1886's silhouette, expected more, or wanted "Elegant French Fashions of the Nineteenth CENTURY," this is decidedly NOT what you're looking for.

For anyone interested in Victorian sewing and costume design, this is a great book to have around for reference. The colors are vibrant, and the author does a great job on the descriptions for each of the plates in the book. While the book states this is fashion of the 19th Century, it would probably be better to say Fashion of 1886 since that is they year all the plates are taken from.

This is a softcover book of great bustle fashions from Victorian time La Mode Illustree magazine. Pictures are really nice, big and with rich colors. Very happy that there are no black-and-white illustration in this editon, they all are colored!!! I recommend this book for any Victorian bustle fashion enthusiast! Lovely illustrations and fashion plates!

This is a very interesting book. It is almost every colored plate published in La Mode Illustree over the course of one year- 1886. The plates cover every season and almost every activity. There are dinner dresses, seaside dresses, afternoon dresses and riding costumes. The season changes can be seen in style and color of fabrics and trims. It's a fascinating look at a year in a fashion magazine, but it is important to know it covers only one year. This is not an overview book, but rather a close up of a brief time in fashion. In some ways, that makes it more interesting because it provides an in-depth examination of that year, but the title of the book is a little misleading.

As usual, Dover Publications comes up with a delightful book on historic fashion. The flair and elegance is a treat and this book would be an excellent reference work for anyone looking for the way Parisian women looked in the 19th century.

1880年中頃の「French」 ファッション
Reviewed in Japan on May 9, 2008Verified Purchase
