Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Chronicle of the Old Testament Kings charts the rise and fall of the leaders of Israel from Abraham to Herod. The first founders of the nation (such as David, Solomon, and Moses) and the prophets who first judged their leadership (such as Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Elijah) are brought vividly to life, with lavish color maps, time lines, photographs of archaeological treasures, and reproductions of later artists' imaginative renderings of each figure. These features alone make Chronicle of the Old Testament Kings a whiz-bang coffee-table book. In addition, author John Rogerson, a professor of Religious Studies at the University of Sheffield, also provides an accessible, absorbing set of profiles of Israel's leaders. He considers all of the crucial debates in biblical scholarship today: Did the earliest biblical leaders of Israel actually exist? How much can we know about them? And how should that historical knowledge influence our reading of the Bible? Rogerson's intrepid exploration of these questions, presented in such a stylish volume, makes Chronicle of the Old Testament Kings a valuable addition to any library of books about religion.

Good history of biblical times from Moses to the destruction of the temple in the year 70. This book is also of help in understanding the bible, in that it list all the kings in order and approximate years. Used copies are available at a low cost. If you want to study the bible, get this book.

Rogerson here timelines the Hebrew and Jewish kings that followed after King David first established kingship of the Twelve Tribes. Saul had never achieved this, only uniting about 4.5 Tribes, shakily. So to begin with, Rogerson is slightly off base, crediting Saul with David's accomplishment. Rogerson continues this off-baseness down the line, not clearly defining the evolutionary course of the religion or Hebrew Scriptures, as defined by Wellhausen in the well-accepted Developmental Theory. What he does accomplish is a very workable and handy timeline after David, where Scriptures itself becomes a mishmash about the king list and its possible timeline. For this headwork, he has given us a valuable guide to an obscure king list of Judaic civilization, that created the foundation of 3 world-moving religions and its best-seller Holy Book that Christianity accepted as its own at the Council of Nicea. But it is more of an outsider's view looking for limited answers, than an insider's view who commands his subject. He has left out many essentials, such as the division between the Judaic king list and the Edomite-Idumaean one imposed upon Judea by Rome. More importantly, he has left out the Hadrian Holocaust, and how Judaism survived it largely through self-perpetuating Judaic dynamic colonies in Babylon, Alexandria and Rome with backflow to a Judaically devastated and Roman-corrupted Jerusalem. There is a critical difference between David, who created the first Hebrew nation, and who persecuted and exiled no one, and the Roman-imposed tyrant Herod the so-called Great, a kind of proto-Saddam Hussein of his time.
In short, this is a limited perspective that bypasses some essentials of the story it is telling. Within its limits, which include a negative view of King David that is extremely arguable but very British and Anglican, and does not seem to recognize Judaism's claim to be a civilization, he has compiled a quick supplemental reference that should be in major library systems. A workable timetable, but missing some essentials and fairness. Handsome illustrations.

If you are looking for an indepth scholarly analysis or are looking for a faithful summary of what the Bible says do not buy this book.
However, if you are looking for a basic summary of current scholarship on old testament chronology, along with lots of great photos and maps, this is a great book to buy. The text is organized well and the photos really enhance the learning experience. I bought this because I needed to get a very quick summary of the kings and I was not disappointed. I also feel more confident that I would be able to follow a more scholarly treatment of the problems in old testament chronology having read this book.

Obviously due to the size of the book, not all the information on each ruler can be in this book. This is a good expanded overview with images and historical information. I also liked the running timeline on the bottom of pages where new Kings were introduced.

Basic information about the Jewish leaders in ancient times
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 23, 2009Verified Purchase
This book is useful to every one interested in the history of the leaders of the Tanakh (Old Testament). It tries to present these leaders as historical figures based on historical facts. Knowing that the only source of information the Tanakh (Old Testament) is, you will not learn much more about these biblical leaders. The book is very well-illustrated and presents you the Jewish leaders in a non-religious context and is suitable for anyone who wants basic information on the leaders of Judaism in ancient times.
