This book is an academic text that pieces together the facts about the Hittites from their translated clay tablets and archeological finds, and gives the reader a modern appreciation for these ancient civilization builders.

No stone is left unturned, how they arranged their families, worshiped their gods, fought their wars, and secured the critical tin for the making of bronze is carefully described.

The book was originally published in the 1970s, this is a 1996 paperback version. No doubt there is more info on the Hittites out there as new discoveries have been made.

I enjoyed this. If not for an upcoming trip to Turkey, I probably would not have bothered. Glad I did as this was a very interesting subject. The book started somewhat dry, but was fascinating that so much info can be gleamed from archeology and from written records. This book covers the history of the Hittites, rise and abrupt fall. Also it covers a wide variety of subjects about the society-religion, military, agriculture. Not a bad book for covering King Midas, King Croesus, Cyrus the Great, King Tut and more. Worth my time.

I recommend this book for anyone who, like me, sought to know more about the Hittites and their contemporaries. Having just returned from a month in Turkey that stimulated my appetite for knowledge and understanding about this region I sought a book on the Hittites that would be accessible to an educated but amateur reader, and this fits the bill very well.

The best entree for this book is travel to Hattusa, where you can be photographed at the lion gate, standing on a nephrite jade pedestal on the site of the main temple, and with other notable framings. (Turkey is very tourist-friendly!) This book is full of fascinating information, albeit somewhat rusty. I found the organization to be somewhat peculiar (i.e., not the way I would have approached it)...but then, there is no demand for a book on the Hittites by such as me! [Footnote: No one writes of the Hittites without reference to "the sea people" in connection with the collapse of the Hittite Empire. It is time, however, to de-mystify "the sea people", so called only by the Egyptians, who engaged in naval warfare with invaders. Those were times of expanding populations and mass migrations. There was a knock-on phenomenon involving southward incursions of Dorians in the Balkans, migrations into western and central Anatolia by people later identified as Phrygians, and related excursions by the Luwian-speaking Lukka people of western and southwestern Anatolia. These and other people on the move sometimes allied with each other in search of new territory and, of course, loot! Trade was halted, supply routes were severed, and polities collapsed.]

I rate this book poor for the following reasons.
author assumes you know as much about archeology as he does
author introduces many references and points without the basic definition
author has no texts or translations of any documents from hittite history
not recommended, would not waste $1 on it again.
this book may be useful if you are well versed in what is already know about them.

The book is a fine introduction to origins and development of late Bronze age cultures in Asia Minor. It describes the role of the Hittites in world history especially relative to the Assyrian and Egyptian empires. It clarifies Troy as linguistically Greecian. Hittites supplanted and assumed neighbors Hurrians, Mitanni and Azawa.

The author takes us through the succession of kings Suppiluliuma, Murseilus and others including Muwatalli who fought the Battle of Qadash against Ramses II in 1280 BC. The Hittites had geographical military advantage of interior communication lines and strategy of phalanx and chariots. They held their own until succumbing under invasions of the Sea Peoples.

Politically, we see rule under king and elders of a group of city states similar to those in Greece and Mesopotamia. Economic analysis centers on tin and copper, instrumental in weaponry of the era. We see religion, daily life and Anatolian legacy of Lydians and Phrygians that survived into the Roman era.

Good maps help to clarify the text. I rate this an excellent study and reference, admittedly without comparing it to other available histories.
