This is the pride of my aerospace library, I can't begin to tell you how valuable this book is to anyone researching the early days of Mankind becoming Spaceborne. Although there are flaws (potassium superoxide is mentioned in the ASTP chapter but missing from the index, e.g.) this is the most replete, complete, entertaining and awesome book about man in space that has ever been built, no apologies to Mr. Wolfe and "The Right Stuff". It's huge, probably as big as six of your little computer tablets or laptops and 2" thick, densely illustrated in B&W and color, and the new editions have updated pages on the declassified Soviet program as well (though the first version did a very respectable job of covering it!) THIS is a COFFEE TABLE!

(Did you know that one of the victims of the 'jinxed' Apollo 13 mission was a NASA Security pickup truck? Burned to the ground, nothing left but rust, yet - just like the mission itself - the crew lived to tell the tale! This book is full of tidbits like this!)

Excellent reference book for the beginning of manned space flight

I did not purchase this book through Amazon. I had purchased this book almost immediately after it was published in 1981, but for some reason never had a chance to read it. I finally did read it this year, 2019. I consider this book to be a reference book of the beginning of the manned space program in the U.S. and Russia, from the early 20th century visionaries and pioneers to the SkyLab missions. It does not cover the Shuttle program, though it does give information as to the beginning of the Shuttle program. This book is extremely detailed in a technical manner as it describes the spacecraft that were built and the operation of the various spacecraft systems, orbit descriptions, re-entry angles, thruster burn times, etc. All parameters are given in S.I. units, so if you want English units you'll need a calculator for conversions. It also describes the administrative machinery of NASA, who was in charge of what, who reported to who, and how this NASA administrative machinery evolved during the course of the early space program. Again, I view this book as more of a historical reference book than an easy historical read. The only complaint I have about the book is that many acronyms are used and it would have helped the reader if there had been a table of acronyms for the reader to consult when needed. However, the author does a great job in providing the reader tables of flight data for the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, SkyLab, and ASTP missions. There are tables for astronaut selection, astronaut candidates, and cosmonaut assignments. There is also a manned flight log for both astronaut and cosmonaut space flight missions. As an historical reference book, I highly recommend it!

This book has an amazing amount of material in it, no skimping on the story that's for sure. Well written, good coverage, it is the the reference guide to manned space exploration. It is a huge book, and a lot of pages. Will take a while to read but it is a pleasure to do so.
