Principia Mathematica was first published in 1910-13; this is the ninth impression of the second edition of 1925-7. Could it be true that Whitehead and Russell's Principia Mathematica is the most influential book written in the 20th century? Ask any mathematician or philosopher--or anyone who understands the impact these fields have had on modern thinking--and you'll get a short answer: yes. Their goal, to set mathematics on a firm logical foundation, was revolutionary, and their tools and rigor continue to influence modern professionals. Using Peano's symbolic logic, they formalized axioms and produced theorems (including the famous "1 + 1 = 2") in orderings, continuous functions, and other areas of mathematics.

Although the Principia is far from comprehensive, Whitehead and Russell's method and program captivate their readers. The audacity to hope to formalize all of mathematics logically was inspirational and helped to give great boosts to math and logical philosophy. Though Gödel proved in 1931 that any such program is doomed to incompleteness, the tools found in and developed from the three volumes helped build the atomic bomb and the Internet. It may not be summer-vacation reading (for most), but Principia Mathematica will reward the dedicated student with a deeper understanding of how we got here. --Rob Lightner

I understand people find these books to be a bit old and not an easy read. And you really need to start with volume one, since it provides a great discussion to start the reader off.

And they are not a pleasure read. But you will learn alot, and the text and their discussions are priceless and definitive.

This one is my favorite, it covers well-ordered series and ordinal numbers. Their notes are interesting and instructive Also vectors are in this volume.
For 60.00 you can get the complete set on amazon.

There are lots of multi-paragraph reviews on this item, which are reviewing how wonderful is the work that is Principia Mathematica. That's nice.... I wonder if any of the people here bought THIS COPY of the book.

Let me warn you as to what you are going to receive....

You'll receive the middle of the book. Chapters 3-5 to be exact. You're also paying good money for a scanned copy of a nearly 100-year old work. It is poorly cropped, with smudges everywhere, and many unreadable characters/sections.

I purchased this to enjoy the challenge of the work, as the material itself is quite substantial. However part of that "challenge" should not be trying to determine one smudged symbol from another.

It would also be nice to receive the beginning of the book (?) sort of a given that if you purchase something called "Principia Mathematica" - that one would receive the entire work.

I have the print edition of this work and thus am not deprived. This attempt to "Kindle-ize" it is a total failure. Occasional recognizable words peek through the gibberish. I guess I should have expected this.

Ugly, poorly scanned copy of part of the book. Waste of time. Do NOT BUY!!!!! Be sure to read the reviews. I think the multi-starred reviews are generally aimed at the actual work rather than this edition.

Me and My girlfriend, we are into philosophy and such, she wanted Principia Mathematica for a long time, she loves logic. I ordered and bought the book for her birthday.

but just a heads up!

I chose the nabu edition [with the clock on the cover] believing it was including all volumes , but I was wrong, this is volume III and I don't see any other vol. by nabu, which would help me complete the entire set. don't be fooled by this published edition. the cover is not specifying much either, nor it's details. this led me to a regretful confusion. Where I live the book isn't available and knowing how pricey it is, then I had no other choice but to buy it online. if you're going to buy one, for starters, go pick the one that says to *56 on the cover. don't be fooled by this version. not that is a bad thing, but it's just isn't enough nor satisfactory.
