Positive Populism: Revolutionary Ideas to Rebuild Economic Security, Family, and Community in America Hardcover – September 4, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Fox News host and former government insider Steve Hilton shows how populism can be a positive force for improving lives, with revolutionary ideas to restore the economic security that working Americans once took for granted, and rebuild the ties of family, community and nation that have been ripped apart by decades of policies that favored big government, big business, and the powerful.
Recounting his own journey from immigrant roots to the heart of power - and his deeply personal battles with the permanent bureaucracy once there - Hilton vividly describes the scale of change that's needed if the true promise of the populist revolution is to be delivered, including:
• An unprecedented assault on centralized government and the administrative state to make sure “Drain The Swamp” is not just a slogan
• A completely fresh approach to jobs, schools and skills so every working American can live on what they earn
• Practical steps to reverse the disaster of family breakdown so that every child can be raised in a stable, loving home
• Ideas to revitalize our communities by giving citizens real control
Whether by challenging the excess power of corporations in our economy or the corrupt influence of donors and lobbyists in our government, the ideas in this book echo the intent of America’s founders by taking power from the ruling class and putting it in the hands of the people.
For too long, populism has been defined by those who despise it. By focusing on what populism is for, and not just what it’s against, Hilton provides a coherent philosophy and practical blueprint for how the movement can have an impact beyond one election cycle, and in people's everyday lives. That’s Positive Populism.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2018Wherever you stand on the political spectrum, you'll find something to love AND something to hate in Steve Hilton's new book.
That's exactly why you should read it. And think about it.
At a time when political polarization is at an all time high, Hilton's book tries to defuse some of the tensions, which might seem like an odd goal for someone who works for Fox News and has never been associated with the left. Yet, that's exactly what he tries to do in this book.
He tries to make the case that populism does not need to be racist, sexist, or xenophobic. He also does not think that populism has to lead to leftist economic solutions either. In terms of the economy, he tries to strike a balance between security for all which the left would like and a commitment to market principles that have long been honored in the breach by right and left alike. Put simply, he calls for limited government but also for a government that is one partner in providing a society that works for everyone.
It took me a long time to read this book despite the fact that it is both reasonably short and quite well written. It took me a long time because I had to think especially about the ways the ideas he raises could be used to bring left and right closer together. Maybe not today. Maybe a few years down the road when/if cooler heads like his begin to prevail.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2018Steve Hilton’s Positive Populism is a must read for those willing to bring lateral, creative thinking to their political mindset, conservative or liberal in any of their many articulations.
Steve reminds us that we are a country founded on inalienable natural law rights with a healthy regard for checks on government power: mainly, the checks and balances of the federal three branches; and, the federal system now with 50 states each with its own constitution. As founded, our country was essentially decentralized and governed as locally as possible. But, we have grown into a massive federal bureaucracy with decisions made in a central capitol remote from the people. This has increasingly led to a government of the elite, for the elite and by the elite (my summary) with corresponding wealth transfers to the elite (consider the inanity of working full time and being eligible for food stamps while corporate executives and investors get wealthy.
Steve has a formula for reducing the intrenched bureaucracy while addressing governmental and social issues more efficiently, effectively and realistically. Think, far less bureaucracy, localism, accountability and a government that contracts with business (free enterprise) to get things done. Steve, with appropriate nuance, employs this basic formula to a myriad of contemporary issues: health care, education, breakdown of the family, etcetera.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2021Steve Hilton provides a very well reasoned and insightful analysis of the current state of America. He provides many positive prescriptions to help us get things channeled in the right direction . I don’t agree with every single thing he writes in the book but much of it is thought-provoking and wise.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2018I love this book, though I have to read it in bite-size pieces. Lots to digest! I am not an economist so don't know how some of Steve Hilton's ideas play out practically. As a registered Independent, I have been saddened by the ideas brought forth by both Republicans and Democrats, thinking there must be another way (or several) that can solve some very looming problems we are faced with. And constantly argue back and forth on. Too bad for the few bad reviews given...not enough deep thinkers, IMO. Nice work, Steve. No, I don't think you're a "Socialist in wolves clothing."
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2019As an independent thinker who enjoys Hilton's columns on "positive populism," I looked forward to this book. I thought it started strong but fizzled for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2019I am very much enjoying Steve Hilton's simple, (uncommon) common sense aproach to government and regulations.
His philosophy of "good for the citizen's" is constant, and different from the current systems.
Like his Fox tv show discussions, he makes us think why, and then tells us, about how the Swamp benefits from their status quo arrangements.
He also tells us how to make changes.
Excellent, not-difficult reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2018I think Steve is a intelligent man. He is thankful for the opportunity to be in America. This is a great book to start a debate. I did not agree with some of his views or ideas in his book. I did like this thinking outside the box. Take what’s worked in other countries similar to ours and implement it here. I world definitely recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2018Steve Hilton brings a very interesting history to the discussion of Populism. Expansive ideas and interesting views of British politics from the inside relative to the issue.
