I recently took a trip from Las Vegas up the Pacific Coast highway to Seattle and back through Portland, Boise, and Salt Lake. This Atlas allowed me to navigate very easily through all of the states including some areas I had previously mapped out but had to change routes because of winter storms and such. Traveling from Seattle towards Spokane the I90 was closed because of an avalanche at the snoqualmie pass so I needed to head further south to make my way East. Anyway I originally had planned to travel down near Mt. Ranier and through a couple mountain passes. The Atlas clearly marked that certain passes were closed during winter which saved me a bunch of driving time rather than having to find out the hard way myself.
This Atlas is a must have for anyone driving through the US. It will easily allow you to map routes as well as alternate routes which I used different color highlighters to show on the various pages. The Atlas includes a double page of the entire US so you can get a feel of the major Interstates and then drill down into the state pages to obtain more detail about your routes. Another great feature is that the larger states have numerous pages dedicated to them so a bunch of roads are not all crammed together on one page.
The plastic cover is a great feature as well and saved the Atlas from getting ruined from snow along the way.

Everyone has smart phones and GPS units now, but you still really need a road atlas before you plan a long-distance trip. Smart Phones and GPS's will typically route you just on the interstate, even though you might save several hundred miles by taking the more direct highway route. For example, a trip from Austin, TX to Salt Lake City, UT, google maps routed us to drive up the interstate to Kansas, then to get on another interstate and go west to Utah. Just by looking at this atlas, we found that we could drive a much more direct route by taking state-highways through west Texas, New Mexico, and then up through Utah.
What's the difference between a highway and an interstate? Highways might go down to one-lane roads, and highways will frequently pass through small towns meaning that you have to slow your speed to 30mph for a few minutes. Interstates are all freeways, meaning you get on them and the speed limit is pretty much always 55mph or above.

I have been a loyal user of Rand-McNally Road Atlases for more than 20 years. They are light-weight, sturdy, well designed, comprehensive, (and most importantly),they have great maps that are ACCURATE and UP TO DATE!
The 2006 edition is no different, except that it comes with a strong vinyl cover (which also doubles as a handy file pouch for brochures, receipts, tickets, etc.) and a newly formatted index of cities, counties and states, with up-to-date population estimates, and easily understood indices.
The choice of lavender and purple highlights and overtones for the index can make reading the small font sizes a little tricky (especially if you suffer from "old eyes", as I do). But this is a trivial complaint; by and large, the 2006 Rand-McNally Road Atlas is the best deal you will find. If you buy it, you won't be sorry.

Very handy on a road trip as it has both road condition and tourism phone numbers. It has a driving miles chart and also an estimated travel time map. The city maps are good and will do for most situations when passing through and making a brief stop. If you are going to be in a city for a long time and taking in all the sites then you will probably want to purchase a city map.
Spiral binding is great and we keep it on the page of the state we are driving through.

The 2008 Atlas was in excellent condition, much, much better than I anticipated. It looked as if it had been barely used. I’m going to use it as an illustration for a project I’m doing. I am extremely satisfied with the product.

I have always been a lover of maps. When going on a trip this holiday season, I realized our Atlas was really out of date, and so I added this to my shopping cart with other travel necessities. I'm very glad I did - it was very helpful. I especially appreciated the many detailed sections of areas - Southern California particularly had a lot of details you just can't make out from the overall california map.
Very good quality and IMO, a good value. I won't wait 10 years before getting a new atlas this time around, but this didn't break the budget enough that I should have to!

Ever since my first trip to NYC in 1989, I have relied on having a -no more than 2-3 years old- copy of Rand McNally in our rented car.
Visiting USA and/or Canada every,2-3 years, as a tourist, it has proven invaluable.
My wife and I like to get out on our own.
Relying on information from the local people we meet. It be family, friends or the waitress at the local diner.
That way we've had many pleasant and -often- unexpected experiences.
I'm pretty good at finding my way around. And with this map to guide me, I've not yet been totally lost. It be, driving along the vast north-eastern highway-system, or out on the small British Coloumbian backroads.
I recommend this for everyone planning a trip to America. Buy it at home. And use it for planning -and dreaming. Besides the maps there's also a lot of useful information regarding general traffic rules. Invaluable stuff to a foreigner used to european traffic.

This atlas is very large and spiral bound for easy flip-through. I especially love the travel highlights by state at the back. I agree with the other reviewer that it is an ideal travel guide for the arm-chair traveler.
