This is a useful book for anyone who has no knowledge of UNIX commands, or whose knowledge is minimal. Otherwise, I would recommend "Mac OS X for UNIX Geeks" instead.

I was disappointed in this book, but maybe I expected too much from a low cost O'Reilly title. Generally, I have found them to be quite useful. Unfortunately, this book is poorly organized for somebody trying to actually figure out how to do something complex in the Mac Unix. You'd be better off getting a good general Unix reference. While the major commands are described, the book leaves out a lot of the advanced flags, which makes the book only partially useful. Also, the organization makes very little sense to me, but for a rank beginner in Unix, it might be more useful.

Very nice and complete introduction book

Hey guys, it is not a book for gurus it is for learners and for beginners. As such this book is completely up-to the task and it is well written and easy to follow. It is never easy task to learn new things and studying UNIX isn't exception. This book is very nicely, didactically organized and facilitates the transition from subject to subject. I used this book and Linux and UNIX for a beginner training suite, 4DVDs + 2CDs includes 4 Unix Academy Certifications ed.2008 and they made the very efficient couple.
You have the smooth consistent info with the book and then you have the workflow with the DVD. This book cover basics but often the basics are the most difficult things. For those people who had never touched UNIX internals of their Apple computer this book will do and it will make good intro into completely different way to do things.

A good first step for starting to use Unix on your Mac

I pulled this title off my shelf where it had been gathering dust for the better part of a decade and was impressed to find it both helpful and mostly relevant. While some of the images and corresponding discussion of the Mac OS "Aqua" interface are understandably out of date, the bulk of the content is as relevant today as when the book was written. A quick read in one easy sitting, this book provides a very solid beginner's tutorial on Unix that is tailored to the specifics of using it in the Mac OS X environment. This edition spends more time than many (non-nostalgic) readers might care about using Unix Internet programs (e.g., text-based e-mail) but this appears to have been remedied in newer editions. Similarly, some of the sections such as the one on configuring printing may no longer be valid for current versions of OS X. That said, if you're a Mac user wanting to learn the basics of using Terminal, the Unix filesystem, and other fundamentals before diving into other Unix books, I would not hesitate to recommend whichever edition of this book fits your budget.

This is a fairly small book. It covers the basics of UNIX that someone who is coming from the Mac world will find helpful. If you think you are going to become an major UNIX geek, I would recommend UNIX in a nutshell instead.

A beginners guide to getting into UNIX

I am not sure what the other posters thought but this book simply brought you into the world of UNIX. For some reason they thought they were going to learn in-depth UNIX in 150 pages. "Learning UNIX for OS X" is just a small step into learning the command line interface in Mac OS X. This book does not show you architecture of the OS nor advanced commands, Mac OS X Unleashed goes over these in-depth. OR if you want to master the command line, get O' Reilly's "Learning CSH & TCSH". The only real problem I had with this book is that it was an alteration of the already being published "Learning UNIX" book by O'Reilly which I own as well. While this book wasn't a waste of time, quite a bit was identical.
