Since the dawn of Windows 2000 and Active Directory, the standard response from Microsoft on performing mass operations has been "simply script it" (OK, great. How do I do that?) The Active Directory Cookbook quickly shows you how.

Need to create user en masse? No problemo. This book shows you how to with both a VBscript and a command line FOR loop with DSADD.

Need to:

reset users passwords?

move users?

find out when a user last logged on?

create and populate groups?

generate a report of GPO properties with VBscript?

programattically create sites?

This book is for you!

I also recommend Robbie Allen's Windows Server Cookbook in conjunction to this title.

Firstly a warning, this is the second edition and covers Windows 2003. There is a third edition that covers the newer OS. I bought this book by mistake and it's too big (postage would be too expensive) to return. So buy with care.

This is a big book in terms of pages but the content is less than stellar. Don't expect to find too much on designing AD in real world situations such as integration with networking topologies and devices. Nor expect to find details on integrating AD with other Microsoft technology such as SharePoint. No this cookbook is really an administrator companion, and I think it does a pretty decent job in that but not more.

Having just finish migrating from Novell 5.0 to Windows 2003, I have purchased 2 other books (Windows 2003 Administrator Companion and Windows 2003 Pocketbook), neither was able to provide the amount of Active Directory details as this book.
With this book, I am able to provide answers to frequently asked questions about active directory rather then going thru my list of newsgroups and forums. Thus far, I have found this book to be extremely useful for a windows 2003 administrator, especially those who deal with Active Directory on a daily basis.

As an indeependent consultant that has been working with windows since version 2, this book was a welcome addendum to all the scripting I've been doiong. Not only were common tasks enumerated concisely, but the examples were easy to extend up to the next level with the descriptions provided. The newer features of the 2003 scripting were adequately covered, and pointed out a few inroads that I hadn't thought of, or even been given concepts of by my Microsoft testing. Well done.

WOW!
I have been searching the 'net for some simple examples of ADSI stuff. I am creating a system for an Internet Cafe to manage users and do accounting of printing etc. I need to make the user management tools, After seeing your examples I was able to get the first concrete example from your code. THANK YOU!

Excellent reference if you work with AD on a regular basis either as an admin or a developer. Each "how to" offers methods for manually performing a specific task as well as (where possible) how to automate the task using code. Should be on every Windows admin/developer's desk.

You will be superbly happy with this book. Recommended to me by a Microsofter and I am extremely pleased. Examples for GUI, Command-line and VBScript. This is awesome Robbie! Keep up the hard work.
