Betrayal: Toxic Exposure of U.S. Marines, Murder and Government Cover-Up Paperback – September 18, 2013

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

BETRAYAL chronicles the riveting story of toxic chemical exposure, cocaine trafficking, murder and gun running in the Marine Corps. Marine Corps Air Station El Toro on the West Coast (CA) and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune on the East Coast (NC) were two of the most environmentally hazardous sites in the country and the setting for this breaking news story. BETRAYAL reports the denial of the effects of exposure to toxic chemicals to veterans and their dependents, including the highest incidence of male breast cancer at Camp Lejeune of any demographic in the U.S. None of the veterans that served aboard these two installations were notified of their exposure to deadly contaminants when it was discovered resulting in both bases earning EPA Superfund status. Many have died without ‘connecting the dots’ between their killing diseases and military service. Even after approval of health care by the VA for Camp Lejeune Marines, those with deadly cancers have to fight for VA disability compensation benefits; most of the claims are denied by the VA and the veterans die before their appeals can be heard; dependent toxic tort claims gather dust in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s office files with no interest on the government in processing any claim. BETRAYAL uncovers the shocking story of gun running, cocaine trafficking, murder, and government cover-up in a covert operation gone wrong at El Toro, once the premier Marine Corps fighter base. The government denies any use of El Toro to support CIA proprietary aircraft to ship weapons south and cocaine north into the country. The evidence supports that El Toro and other military bases were used to funnel cocaine into the US to support the Contra War in Nicaragua. The death of Marine Colonel James E. Sabow at El Toro remains classified as a suicide, even though the evidence supports murder of this straight arrow Marine officer who refused to look the other way. Other El Toro Marines who knew too much met violent deaths. Military service is a duty that citizens voluntary take up to defend the Constitution and their rights as Americans, but if this service is seen as leading to toxic poisoning and the murder of those who are a threat to blow the whistle on illegal covert activities with no repercussions on military leadership, then the impact on military readiness and the defense of this country will suffer.

2/3 's of the book deals with El Toro MCAS. It exposes the United States Government in a murder, drug dealing for the cartels and illegal arms trafficing. Besides toxic water, El Toro also had chemicals in the ground and air in the hangers where Marines worked on planes.....a lot of really good background info with the end result for veterans with major health issues being your on your own. Veterans can only apply for a disability rating and compensation. No tort relief can be filed and their familes can sue the government, however they will deny and refuse to acknowledge any responsibility.

The information in this books will save lives! It needs to be read by every military member and people that lived on military bases (or civilians that worked there) so that they know of the toxic chemicals, and can get in touch with people they know that lived or worked at the contaminated sites. It is critical this information gets out there, which is why I ranked it 5 stars.

The book needs a heavy editing hand, duplicate pages removed and a good spell check. Despite this, I still rank it 5 stars because of the lifesaving information in its pages.

This book was taken down by me in 2015. The material in BETRAYAL was broken out into two books. TREACHERY which is an investigative report of murder, cocaine trafficking and the destruction of Arrow Air 1285 in Gander, Newfoundland and A FEW GOOD MEN, TOO MANY CHEMICALS which the story of toxic exposure of US Marines at MCAS El Toro and Camp Lejeune.

Far too many of these sorted stories remain untold, but for our very bravest and very best which come forward against all odds even as this story reveals, against the threat of death at the hands of their brothers in arms.
I applaud the courage it surely must have taken for these Marines to come forward as they did in the hope of stopping these sanctioned tragedies.
It is so very sad this Nations very best men are murdered by the ones they have committed themselves to serve.

The story line is interesting but the flow of the technical details is laborious, the book could have been more streamlined and orderly.
