Before Kerry lays out his positions on everything from education reform to health care, foreign policy and civil liberties, he discusses his candidacy in the context of his calling to public service, hitting on the themes of finding common ground and restoring America's promise. Kerry's belief in service strongly shapes the campaign platform, as in his suggestion that community service should become a requirement for high school graduation. The Massachusetts senator's biography is conspicuously muted, serving as "background music to the main theme of my life right now." Thus, you won't learn why Kerry enlisted to serve in Vietnam or why he later opposed the war. On the other hand, his military experience clearly influences his anger over the Bush administration's reduction of veteran's benefits in the midst of war: he charges that the president "does not understand his duty toward the troops." He's also moved by the need to wean ourselves from "the wrong energy sources controlled by the wrong people," a principle that influences not just his environmental views but his attacks on corporate subsidies and, perhaps, his goal of elevating Middle Eastern economies through trade in products other than petroleum. Should he secure the nomination, Kerry promises to run on a platform of ideas. This book shows that he has a lot of them to offer.

My comment on John Kerry's book on A Call To Service was delayed until President Bush spoke at the Republican Party convention on 9/03/04. At the convention, President Bush presented over 15 vote-getting initiatives that would be offered in his second term. Based on Bush's speech and Kerry's book, these two men are as different as night and day. But this difference can be seen in Kerry's well written book, which shows the basic difference between the Republican Party and Democratic Party.

This basic difference has its origin in the two principles that Abe Lincoln used to declare the Civil War. One principle is "freedom" and the other is "union." Lincoln gave freedom to all Americans with the Emancipation Proclamation. And, Lincoln held the union together as the USA, just as the Constitution mandated government to "to form a more perfect Union." Kerry's book shows that Republicans are working only for freedom but that Democrats are working for both freedom and union.

Thus, it is clear that the purpose of governmental spending (or taxing) by a Democratic administration is to expand freedom and perfect the USA. Examples of the perfection of the union are FDR's New Deal, Truman's Marshall Plan, LBJ's Great Society, JFK's high technology space program/Cold War, and Clinton's Third Way globalization. And, it is also clear that the purpose of governmental spending (or taxing) by a Republican administration is to expand freedom and support a trickle-down economy. But, such an economy does not work. Louise Woodburn (April 1992) "Estimation of Household net Worth Using Model-Based and design-Based Weights: Evidence from the 1989 Survey of Consumer Finances;" and Kennickell, Arthur B., Douglas A. This report shows that tax-cuts for the rich fail and merely increases government debt.

The Democrats will get my vote in November. But, also because freedom and union were both created by God.

John Kerry is a very bitter man towards President Bush. He shows throughout the book when he exclaims how President Bush has messed up the whole world. Three of the main things that I didn’t agree with Kerry about are his idea of healthcare, energy and oil, and education.

Kerry’s idea of health is very similar to President Obama’s. I personally disagree with the idea. I think the United States is fine with healthcare where it is right now. Obviously if people really wanted healthcare they would have already made the effort to get healthcare through a private funder. I realize that some people don’t have the money to have healthcare, but I do not agree with making healthcare a required thing for each American to have.

His energy and oil ideas are very unique. He wants to make it so that we don’t have to drill anymore to get our oil and also he does not want to buy it from another country. I mean they are both great ideas. There is no way we as a country would survive of that oil that we as a country have produced. We are one of the most advanced countries in the world and almost every American drives a car or uses oil in some form every single day of the week. We could try and produce enough on our own, but it would most likely be a bust. Energy his ideas are similar to the oil ideas. Make our own and find a cheaper way to do it.

Education is the last thing that I didn’t fully agree with him on. He supported the “No Child Left Behind Act.” It’s a good bill, but President Bush didn’t go through with the bill and this made Kerry pretty mad. He said that President Bush is just messing everything up and we have to fix it. He wants to roll back taxes for the rich, and use the money to fund the Act. Which I don’t see how this is a good idea at all. If he were to cut there roll back on taxes he would lose all of their votes.

All in all this book was very interesting. I enjoyed reading about his view. He had some good ideas, but for the most part I didn’t really agree with him. I will admit that I am glad we picked President Bush over John Kerry. I think that President Bush helped the country. Even though that’s not how John Kerry felt at all.

This book will not only help you to get to know Senator John Kerry, it will make you feel good again about America! It is serious stuff, but it is not technical, tedious reading. There are quotes from heavy weights in the history of our country like Abraham Lincoln, yet in no way did I feel like I was reading a history book. I am buying ten more copies to give as gifts.

Specifically about his vision for a revamped citizenry of the USA, this small book is interesting and vital reading for anyone planning to vote in the 2004 elections. Important not only so that we have an opportunity to get to know the candidate, but important to have a written record by which he can be held accountable. This veteran politician has many great ideas...some lofty, some practical...but all admirable.
His final chapter is the best, and most inspiring. He quotes a colonial reference about our country, saying that...What makes America great is the fact that Americans are GOOD. It is that kind of optimistic, patriotic "call to service" which Kerry seems to inspire, rather than rhetoric and instinctive, empty flag waving on command.
