this book combines the best of all those things for me

Because I'm an anarchist (one who believes in direct democracy-no formal government ), a techno-futurist and an ardent science fiction fan, this book combines the best of all those things for me.
It is my sentimental favorite sci-fi book out of the possibly1000 or so S-F books I've read over 55 years although many others have far deeper plots and intrigue like "The Foundation " series and must be considered better books overall.
I've just finished reading five books on the coming technological future in which smarter-than- human AI/robotics will produce a huge abundance of all the necessities for human life .
In "Voyage " the society set up on that distant planet has such abundance and the performance of all labor humans no longer wish to do is done by those robots and humans are free to chose what they will do in their lives .

When viewed from a political angle, i.e. capitalism vs socialism you can easily pick up analogous situations here on 2015 Earth .
I liked that surprise "ending"

The new people coming from Earth don't like that sort of society at all and are militarily prepared science fiction book out to bring capitalism and the need for money into a society that doesn't need it, want it and which never experienced it.

Excellent blend of hard SF and social commentary

On the brink of nuclear war, Earth launches an Alpha Centauri probe that contains blueprints for DNA in digital form, hoping to start a human civilization that can escape the holocaust. Now, decades later, the New American Order (which sounds pretty fascist) sends the first mission from Earth to the new colony, only to find that its society is quite different from Earth's, and in some surprising ways. This is an excellent book, featuring some very imaginative hard SF concepts and far-reaching social commentary. In essence, it amounts to a libertarian manifesto, but in some ways Hogan goes farther than that. I have doubts about how workable his concept would be with a society numbering more than a few hundred thousand souls, but it certainly sounds attractive. Hogan's writing is expert, and his ear for the voice of the military grunts who are the focus of much of the book's action is unerring--kind of an interstellar MASH or Catch-22, if you take my meaning. This is one that I really didn't want to end.

An excellent story, only one bad place in it. One chapter in the middle could be eliminated with nothing taken away from the novel, way too much technical information. Good overall character development and a very surprising but satisfying conclusion.

freedom is disappearing despite the fact that Milton friendman and von mises have shown again and again that history shows with 1 voice that when freedom and unregulated capitalism with no welfare are allowed people prosper and get rich and USA being the best example along with hong kong..

This book follow a ship of earthling who go to a colony ona far planet to bring earth syle democrat administracive rules and crony democrat bank control and safety to the colony.

They get a big surprise.

I tried another of James Hogan's book, even though I disliked his writting in the other one. Well, Voyage From Yesteryear is just as bad as his other works.

Negatives.
Poorly constructed plot.
Almost no character development.
Just plain silly dialogue.

Positives.
Well, the Chiron description was sort of interesting. Other than that, I found nothing remarable or even adequate in this book.

A huge disappointment, but not a surprise.
