From the Back Cover

Komarr could be a garden -- with a thousand more years work. Or an uninhabitable wasteland, if the terraforming fails. Now the solar mirror vital to the terraforming of the conquered planet has been shattered by a ship hurtling off course. The Emperor of Barrayar sends his newest Imperial Auditor, Lord Miles Vorkosigan, to find out why.

The choice is not a popular one on Komarr, where a betrayal a generation before drenched the name of Vorkosigan in blood. In the political and physical claustrophobia of the domed cities, are the Komarrans surrounding Miles loyal subjects, potential hostages, innocent victims, or rebels bidding for revenge?

Lies within lies, treachery within treachery -- Miles is caught in a race against time to stop a plot that could exile him from Barrayar forever. His burning hope lies in an unexpected ally, one with wounds as deep and honor as beleaguered as his own.

I'll never forget this book back in the 90s I joined one of those book clubs and they offered you up to six books and an extremely cheap price but only if you agreed to buy six more at full price. You know and they would send you three books a month unless you told them that you didn't want them and then you had to pay for whatever you kept. Only as a young man I hadn't really caught on to the obligations yet and ended up getting this book completely by chance unwanted uninterested.

Then one day after this book sat on my shelf for over a year I had nothing else to read there was a couple of them on the shelves got from the same source but of all the ones that are sitting up there this is the one that I picked up and once I started reading I just couldn't stop and it was so completely wrapped up in the story that when it was over and I closed the book I had to know the rest.

This is how Louis McMaster Bujold was introduced today and how she quickly became my favorite author. So much to the point that I have read this entire series at least five times I've read this book probably six. Anytime that I speak to somebody about books novels and stories I always bring up this series and the other writings of Bujold. I cannot possibly recommend reading this book and her other works more.

The writing of Lois Mcmaster Bujold is unique in her ability to blend comedy, deep thinking and adventure. Some of her early novels starring her protagonist Miles are space opera. They are very funny while containing accute observation of the follies of war and the failures of politics. Within the series we are introduced to Miles before his birth and and are privy to glimpses of his hyperactive childhood. Miles goes from adolescent to maturity encountering different milestones along the way. In this novel the former military strategist and sometimes space admiral has begun a new career as an imperial auditor. He and his fellow auditor have arrived on the planet Komarr to investigate the damage to solar mirrors that are part of the planetary terriforming reshaping Komarrs ecology. Miles is in a process of ajustment to the very broad powers of his new position. The auditors are to be guests of Ekatrine and her family. Ekatrines husband administers a part of the terriforming project and is stressed by the arrival of auditors who intend to examine the workings of his department, even though one of them is his wife's delightful uncle. The unfolding story is seen partially through the eyes of Ekatrine, and partially from the viewpoint of Miles.
The auditors are tasked to discover and resolve the puzzle of the solar array. Who damaged it and why? Is it sabotage or accident? Is it meant to destabilize positive relations between Barrayar and Komarr?
While the underlying elements of plot are deadly serious, elements of character are immediately funny. By chapter two Miles knows he is uncomfortably attracted to his lovely and very married hostess. Through Ekatrines narration we already know that her marriage is challenging, and her husband difficult. To Miles the family originally appears the archetype of what he now seeks for himself, delightful domesticity with a refined and intelligent woman. Existing in the same space as mystery is an examination of the difficulites of marriage
Circumstances insure that these finely drawn characters are both shaken and stirred by the end of the tale. The conclusion of this adventure includes perhaps my favorite description of the adult Miles. When asked about Miles Ekatrine replies " he's not so short, he's just concentrated."

Miles Vorkosigan is throwing himself into his new job as Imperial Auditor. He's on Komarr working with Auditor Vorthy to determine the cause of the accident that has destroyed a third of the solar array. This damage will severly impact the terriforming of the planet. The Auditor's go planet side to visit Vorthy's niece Ekaterin and her husband Tien Vorsoisson, who works in terriforming so can give them a tour and information.

Next thing Miles knows he's got an extra body, strange pieces of equipment that's should be among the wreakage, a plot to destroy Barrayar wormhole, murder, bribery, and other mayhem. In short, it's your usual romp of convoluted and ingenious plotting with Miles leading the way. The characters this time are a bit more apt to whinge than usual -- but we meet new people and see Miles stretch into his new role.

If you haven't read the other books in the series you might find yourself a bit adrift but it's actually quite readable even if you haven't read all the previous books.

Book number thirteen (in chronological order) of an eighteen book space opera series. However, some people call this a military science fiction series. There are several other books and short stories in the Vorkosigan Universe. This series won the Hugo and Nebula awards for best series in 2017. Also, several of the individual books in the series have either won awards or been nominated for awards. This book was nominated for the 1998 Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel. I have read this book at least twice. I reread the well printed and well bound new MMPB published by Baen in 1998 that I just rebought on Amazon (the sixth printing !). I have rebought the rest of the books in the series in MMPB.

Imperial Auditor Miles Vorkosigan and Imperial Auditor Professor Vorthys have been sent to the planet Komarr by the Barrayar Emperor Gregor Vorbarra to investigate the crash of an ore miner space ship into the soletta space mirror that is slowly warming the iceball planet. Over half of the life giving mirror has been destroyed, the mirror was built three hundred years ago at incredible expense. The resulting level of mystery has Miles exclaiming "We have advanced to new and surprising levels of bafflement" at one point.

One of my three favorite books in the Vorkosigan Saga, I find myself re-reading it at least once a year. It's a go-to when I find myself in a reading slump. Miles is finally really coming of age in this book, learning to live honestly with himself and others, as he was forced to abandon his secret other identity at the beginning of the previous book. More, he's finally in a position where he actually has the authority to pursue whatever plan he wishes. These two things combined leave him reeling and trying to figure out who he is now and what his boundaries are - what actions are appropriate and which aren't? The story moves along at a nice pace, the characters are interesting and the ending is highly satisfying.

When you're the author of an ongoing series--especially one as beloved by fans as is this one--you're confronted with the problem of character development. You can simply ignore the issue altogether--as Rex Stout famously did for 40 years with the never-aging Nero Wolfe--or you can do as Lois Bujold has done--allow her character to grow.

"Komarr" finishes Miles's transition (which started in "Memory") from youthful adventure to "auditor" (roving troubleshooter) and confidant of Emperor Gregor of Barrayar. In "Memory" he was given a temporary assignment, and now, age 30, his position permanent, he is sent to Komarr (which is still restive about being placed under the Imperial administration) to investigate the sabotage of a terraforming project. During his investigation Miles encounters for the first time Ekaterin Vorsoisson, and falls in love while wrapping up the case.

The book, told both from Miles's and Ekaterin's points of view, is darker, more pensive than previous books. Ekaterin, with a nine-year-old son, is trapped in an unhappy marriage to a mid-level civil servant. The author devotes an entire chapter to Ekaterin's attempts to sexually please a man she can hardly stand any more, and the entire tale is filled with emotional issues. As for Miles, he of course still plunges ahead with his customary elan, but with more maturity, and with a shock of recognition or two along the way.

As always readers need not have read previous books in the series to enjoy this one although (especially considering the time line the author helpfully provides in the appendix) it's hard to imagine many new readers would choose this volume as their point of entry.

I’ve read this was not a favourite book in this series for a lot of readers; they consider it a filler or a transition book which essentially only exists to establish Miles’s new career and introduce his potential new girlfriend. I do get their point with the transition tag-I think most of the book is showing us that Miles has grown up-but, overall, Komarr has got a lot of hidden depth which they’ve failed to mention. I’ve said all along that I’ve preferred the planetside mysteries with a touch of political intrigue to the space action/adventure books of the series, so Miles’s new career as an Imperial Auditor suits me just fine. I can’t quite think of an equivalent of the auditor role in real life at the moment, but I guess it’s best described as a detective with unlimited authority and resources. This book shows us the prejudice and bias Miles faces whilst settling into this new role. The job traditionally carries an air of respect and awe about it and auditors are automatically obeyed but, in Miles’s case, there’s the constant question of whether or not he was appointed simply due to his exalted surname. Most of his previous experience is classified and therefore, he can't reveal any details in his defence. Nevertheless, I think Young!Miles would have shown off to all and sundry without any forethought and this new mature Miles is a nice contrast, picking and choosing his moments which results in a much more effective result. (I also love how often LMB makes Miles’s past adventures amusing - his quip about being an expert when it comes to drainage and pipes, for example -- never gets old!) The setting for the book’s investigation is the planet Komarr of the title which also comes with an extra set of prejudices for Miles to face. His father is known to the locals as the infamous ‘butcher of Komarr’, the man they mistakenly think ordered a massacre of their peoples when the Barrayarans conquered the planet. There’re actually some really great poignant moments and brilliant quotes from Miles when he is forced to speak on behalf of his father. All in all, Miles’s behaviour in Komarr shows without doubt that he has finally become the man we all thought he’d be. The second point of the book is, as I said, to introduce readers to Miles’s new love interest. I was surprised that LMB actually gave us Ekaterin’s point of view (in alternate chapters with Miles’s pov). The only other time LMB has used another’s POV was in Mirror Dance (and that was Mark’s, Miles’s clone twin, whilst Miles was indisposed), so I don’t think it’s any type of spoiler to say that LMB was setting up Ekaterin as the romantic heroine for readers to cheer on. In true LMB fashion, she doesn’t make this a conventional romantic meet-cute or Ekaterin the typical female lead. Ekaterin is married, for starters, to a Vor administrator stationed in Komarr. She is also the niece of one of Miles’s fellow auditors and therefore, invites Miles and her uncle into her home when they come to the planet to investigate a ship’s crash, which might be an accident or might be a prelude to a terrorist act. (If you’re not such a sappy romantic as me, I promise you there’s plenty technical scifi mystery plot to keep you happy.) At face value, Ekaterin comes across as naive, ignorant and old fashioned, believing she must follow quite a few Vor traditions that have been left behind by most Barrayans. I was at first confused by this attitude until I realised that LMB was presenting us with a woman who is a victim of domestic abuse. No, her husband does not hit her (there’s a fabulous section featuring this thought) but she has been systematically abused by her husband for almost their entire marriage. Strong female characters are LMB’s speciality and Ekaterin’s personal journey to discovering her relationship is not normal and moving to free herself from it is wonderful. Miles has fallen in love several times during this series but LMB makes it pretty clear that Ekaterin is the real deal. Giving us Ekaterin’s inner thoughts, we get to learn just what she thinks of Miles and his appearance, and it’s so real and true, I just couldn’t help but fall in love with her just from that alone. I obviously now can’t wait for A Civil Campaign. 5 out of 5

Since discovering Lois McMaster Bujold I have been reading my way through the Vorkosigan saga in her suggested chronological order. I've enjoyed every single book, but this one I enjoyed so much that I have to stop for a long overdue review. Bujold is a great writer of wonderful, well-plotted, compelling stories about people as real as any you will meet in fiction. This series is quite old, and so from a Sci-Fi technical perspective, particularly IT, it is clunky and out of date (though the thought of Miles Vorkosigan with a neural lace implant is just frightening!). Even for a lover of Ian Banks, though, Bujold's people are peerless. They are real, fully drawn, brilliantly observed. She gives attention to all the little things that make people individuals; petty faults and little graces. She has a wonderful sense of humour, chuckling along below the surface for much of the time and occasionally bursting out in a spring of delight. Her romantic streak is at least as wide as Barrayar, and why not? I cheered, I laughed, I read curled up in my chair for hours when I should have been doing other things. No need for more, or for spoilers. Just to say that if you are new to this series, you could start with this book because of its unusual viewpoint - previous books have mainly focused exclusively on Miles, and Ekaterina's viewpoint allows you to see him from outside as well as within. It might be quite fun to start here, in fact, and then find out how Miles came to be later in your journey of enjoyment. Ms Bujold, I salute you. Wonderful stuff.
