Book overview

Grand space adventure by the coauthor of Sassinak and Generation Warriors. Heris, a female officer forced to resign her commission, winds up as captain of an interstellar luxury yacht. Being a rich old lady's hyperlight chauffer seems boring, until Heris finds herself fighting for her life against smugglers.

From the Back Cover

Heris Serrano was an officer born of a long line of officers. Being forced by a treacherous superior to resign her commission under a cloud was not just the end of a career path; it was the end of everything that gave her life meaning. Still, even ex-captains grieving for lost careers must eat, and Heris has wound up as "Captain" of an interstellar luxury yacht. Being a rich old lady's hyperlight chauffeur isn't quite the same as captaining a dreadnought, but nothing Heris will ever do again will compare to that.

Or so she thinks....For all is not as it seems aboard the good ship Sweet Delight, and soon Heris finds herself fighting for her life against as varied and villainous a bunch of cutthroats, smugglers, and "sportsmen" as ever had the misfortune to cross her path when she was a captain of the fleet.

About the Author

New York Times best-selling author and former Marine Elizabeth Moon has written many novels, including the Paksenarrion fantasy trilogy (available from Baen as The Deed of Paksenarrion and also as separate books), the Heris Serrano space adventure series (the first three novels of which have been combined as Heris Serrano), and Remnant Population, which was a Hugo Award finalist. For Del Rey, she has written Command Decision, Engaging the Enemy, Marque and Reprisal, Trading in Danger, and the Nebula Award winner The Speed of Dark. After earning a degree in history from Rice University, Moon went on to obtain a degree in biology from the University of Texas, Austin.

When not writing, Moon enjoys photographing wildlife and native plants, singing in a choir, cooking for friends and family, drawing, reading, knitting, and lying in a hammock pretending to be plotting the next book. She and her husband subscribe to and read several science and medical journals (since they're not near any academic libraries.) She lives in Florence, Texas, with her husband and son.

This was my first book by Elizabeth Moon. As a fan of sweeping space opera and a person running short on the authors with which I am more familiar, I turned to this book looking for more. I did not find it but I was not disappointed.

It does involve spaceships, nobility, military dynasties, scoundrels and the other stock items of space opera but they are not put together in operatic form. It made for a pleasant change.

The heroine of the story is one Heris Serrano, late of the space navy. She comes from a long line of naval officers and a naval career is what she desired for her life. It went well for a while but then tragedy struck. Because of the actions of a venal admiral, she found herself disobeying orders. As a result, she faces a choice. She can resign for the good of the service and say nothing or she can stand trial with her entire crew. She chooses to protect her crew and winds up the captain of a rich lady's yacht. It is not a happy decision.

She finds herself with a splendid yacht, and inept and corrupt crew, an employer who knows nothing about yachts and cares mostly for fox hunting and several bratty and aristocratic young people. She is taking them to a fox hunt on another planet. All is not as it seems, however. The kids find themselves being hunted and the yacht's owner turns out to have unexpected depths. A good measure of vengeance helps out as well.

The story is well written and, if not the most exciting I have encountered, certainly well worth the effort of reading it. I look forward to reading more.

I did not expect the plot of this book. I assumed (I know) it would gravitate to some form of military scifi. I realize that the fox hunt scenario was necessary to get everyone to the appointed planet but did it really require all those pages of riding lessons and hunting? I think it was way over done. The four spoiled brats that get thrown into the man hunting mix through their own selfish act is nice. They survive and learn, well three do anyway. The end of this book sets up the next in the trilogy when the heir to the throne is one of the hunters. Of course he is shielded by all, even though he made a human kill, but it is discovered that he is a moron. This will have repercussions in the next book. A decent read but nothing special.

Such a great story, I loved it from the start. How could I have missed this author for so many years? I love military sf, and that part of the story was so very good, the plot interesting and cool. The characters and the interaction between them was excellent. So what killed this book for me, why do I hesitate about reading the next one? The love story in it. It was so sweet and uncomplicated and the love-interest so nauseatingly "perfect". Unlike the rest of the book, that tiny part is so full of clichés it drags the rest of the book down. I know the novel is well known and has sold thousands if not millions for years, but still: Please Ms Moon, please rewrite the love story? The rest is so great!

A space captain leaves the navy and signs on as captain of an luxury yacht. I was wondering about her age, because the cover misleadingly depicts someone about twenty; we later learn that Heris is forty. Presumably these are Earth standard years. (This refers to the excellent Orbit original paperback, not the awful American covers on Amazon.) The story is in three parts.

All is not ship shape aboard the yacht, as the crew have been rooking the elderly lady owner for money in services not carried out and agencies have been sending less than the best personal staff. Heris Serrano makes herself unpopular by insisting on inspections and safety drills.

The recreation of the day includes attending top interplanetary society gatherings to recreate fox hunts on real horses. The yacht owner trains Heris in riding and cross-country, but her young relatives disapprove of getting friendly with mere staff.

Hunting turns all too real for the young socialites, male and female, as they are enmeshed in something that could see them all dead.

The most rewarding part, after the early sewage cleanup, is seeing young Bubbles grow up and think in survival mode, along with her party pals, as money and influence cease to make a difference to their lives. I love horses but never hunted, and while I enjoyed the unexpected sport, I did notice that no reason for killing the quarry was given (the usual one is that foxes eat poultry) nor were we warned that horses could be injured.

The last chapter felt stretched and not necessary; I take it that this is a lead in to the next book. I had been looking forward to seeing the last of the young socialites but apparently that's not going to be the case; however we have probably seen the last of the angst of the captain about leaving the service, so the pace should pick up after this one. I was puzzled by the fact that in this future people still carry notepads and paper sheets of reports. Overall this was a decent read, not adventurous until the last third but full of sound detail with several good female characters. There were no male characters to like, bar one we meet late, and many to dislike.

I read a review of this book and decided to give it a try. I liked it and bought the rest of the serie. But the book is not really a sci-fi book: the main plot is on a planet and I think the location is marginal in the story. There are by far more horses than starship.

I am not much into true science fiction at all. Usually it's just too technical and sterile for my taste. The Serrano books changed my mind. Here is a space opera in the best sense of the word with believable and likable characters, a gripping plot and even a teensy bit of romance to boot. HUNTING PARTY contains a strange but delightful mix of old fashioned science fiction techno stuff, low tech survival adventure, evolving characters, intrigue and, believe it or not, fox hunting. Read it if you enjoy characters you can relate to.
