It really isn't too bad of a read my only problem with it is ,it is very eurocentric. Everyone knows before the industrial revolution Asia and Africa we're the booming points of the globe not only in terms of people popluation but also in trading and wealth. But little mention of anything happening outside Europe. Even in the end of the forward Boorstin says "it can open our vision to vistas of human experience that we never thought of as "history" but which enrich our understanding of the whole human past and of ourselves." When I disagree. It's not the whole of human past. It's mostly Europe's past and I feel like that should be stated. Everyone has a bias it's ok to be somewhat bias but at least point it out.

If a white guy didn't do it first, it's probably not in the book. While it remained interesting to see what sort of things were going on at the same time around the globe, I feel the more modern sections left out entire huge swaths of major social progression in lieu of what sportsball team did what and how well. As luck would have it, when paired with a pen, it still makes a fun coffee table books as guests can make some much-needed edits.

Wish I would have purchased a used, older edition. This newest edition has lots of very brief notations, but not as helpful as I was hoping for. Era sections do not have a few pages of context discussion at the beginning as other volumes do and there are no extra subject focus-boxes intermittently as in other volumes. The Science and Technology volumes of this series are much better, and include modern country designations for reference in the very early entries that this book entirely lacks. This omission requires further research elsewhere to know where in the world the entry is about. (Plenty of room throughout for a single country name inside parentheses.) This oversight, the scant info provided in 4000 covered BCE years, and the highly Eurocentric content make me want to look elsewhere for a broader historical accounting. Wish I hadn’t spent the money on this one.

This is an invaluable resource to put events in their cultural contexts. It is organized by early time periods and then by specific years, all in an easy to read chart format. This book allows one to see and understand the relevance of people, discoveries, politics, the arts, etc. to other components and aspects of the time. It is interesting to look through without a particular purpose, or it is helpful to look up a certain year, event or person since there is a cross reference in the back. I have two editions of Timetables of History, and recently bought this one for my college student grandson. I recommend it for anyone interested in history.

THE TIMETABLES OF HISTORY is an INVALUABLE reference book and is just as important as a good dictionary for all students and the well-informed.
This wealth of information is well-indexed and uniquely organized as a seven-column table of critical categories of historic events. The third edition starts at -5,000 years BC in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The progress of world cultures are continually impacted by the categories outlined chronologically in TIMETABLES OF HISTORY: (1.) Influential leaders and political events (2.) Literature & Theater (3.) Religion, Philosophy, Learning (4.) Visual Arts (5.) Music (6.) Scientific and technological inventions (7.) Daily Life, innovations, trends.
THE TIMETABLES OF HISTORY will clarify lessons and media based on history with a broader understanding of a specific era, lifestyles, significant events, and give insight to how those events moved in a logical tandem to influence history and change the world. If you plan to see an historic movie or read the classics, your entertainment value and understanding will be enhanced by glancing at this book's thumbnail synopsis of the era portrayed beforehand.
The mass of information is exceptionally and uniquely organized. I have read THE TIMETABLES OF HISTORY from cover to cover, and continue to refer to it for information. My copy is well-used, highlighted, underlined, and new material has been hand-printed in the margins. Hopefully, the publishers will update and re-publish both a print and digital edition every decade.

I know, I know. Why get this book when you can just Google what happened in history. This book is a great reference to have handy. The format make it easy to go to a year and an area of interest to see what was happening. I'm a writer of speculative fiction and even though a lot of my work isn't time bound or takes place in completely imaginary worlds, I've found this book to be very helpful when referencing a time period or person.

This is a wonderful reference book. The unique format lets you see at a glance what was going on in different areas of culture at any given point in time. The overview provides a perspective on historical and cultural events that would take countless hours to unearth on your own. Love this book!

I am using this because I am attempting to write a historical fiction/sci-fi fantasy novel. As the characters travel through time, I try to place them in recognizable events. Because this resource is just a list of events, I need to do further research on the events I have chosen, and I find this research immensely satisfying.

Wanted to do myself a comparison table between history, religion, art, family, etc changes. Why spend so much time on that if this book is a complete verson of all this and much more. I was indeed interested to read it for the whole family. And really helpful for kids' studies.
