Book overview

In their last adventure, Hunting Party, Captain Heris Serrano and her employer, Lady Cecelia, had just triumphed over a heinous cabal that used human beings as prey. Now it turns out that one of the hunters was Prince Gerel, first in line to the throne. The prince, proclaiming his innocence, is spirited home by Captain Serrano and Lady Cecelia, but soon a foul plot is afoot.

From the Back Cover

When last heard from, Captain Heris Serrano, cashiered Captain of the Fleet, now captain of a rich lady's yacht, and her employer, Lady Cecelia, had just triumphed over a heinous cabal, a "Hunting Club" that used human beings as prey. Much to her horror, one of the hunters had been none other than Prince Gerel, first in line to the throne. He had been told the nature of his prey only at the last minute, and was assured that they were criminal volunteers who would get off scot-free if only they could avoid the hunters for a mere three days. While deeply uneasy about the morality of the whole venture, and unwilling to indulge in any "hunting" himself, the Prince had been persuaded of the legitimacy of the "club's" activities.

How could he have been so stupid??

Having volunteered herself and her yacht to spirit the Prince home so as to avoid a Royal Scandal, that indeed is the question that Lady Cecelia-of the Blood Royal herself-wants answered; she remembers her nephew the Heir Apparent as a rather bright young lad.

The scope of the series is expanding; this book deals with some political problems of the Familias Regnant monarchy. Hints of problems to come, with Rejuv and cloning and weird drugs. Great to see Bubbles/Brun continue to mature.

[SPOILERS - beware] A lot of reviewers hated the Sirkin subplot - but oddly, most of them complained about Heris not considering the possibility of her being drugged, like Gerel. Honestly, I think that's a stupid assumption - who would have drugged her? Why Sirkin? She's not important. It would have made more sense to drug Heris or Cecelia, if anyone. Yes, the whole crew is the target of smugglers, but there's no reason for her to think the smugglers are the same people drugging the prince. So yes, it's an interesting possibility, but I don't think particularly plausible.

I do think Heris was wrong to assume Sirkin was suddenly making mistakes without investigating it farther, but that's the whole point of the subplot - it's yet another way in which Heris isn't really a civilian. She still trusts Fleet more. [/END SPOILERS].

Another great entry in the series, and the space bugs were funny

In THE HUNTING CLUB, we were introduced to the character of Heris Serrano, unfairly cashiered fleet officer turned private yacht captain for a rich eccentric who likes riding to hounds. It was not the most stellar of books but it was interesting enough to hold the attention. It also prepares the way for this one and this one IS a very good read.

In the previous book, the captain helped to foil a plot in which rich nobility engaged in illicit hunting. It was not the hunting which made it illicit, it was the fact that humans were the quarry. An idiot of a prince had let himself get involved in the hunting and the captain, her employer and a group of unlikely spoiled brats saved the day. In this book, these people who know the prince, realize that there is something wrong with him. He may naturally be a spoiled product of privilege but he was not supposed to be stupid. He is. They have stumbled onto a plot which involved royal intrigue, smuggling, power politics and a fair amount of "whodunit".

What started out as a fair series with nothing really special about it is shaping up to become something more.

Sporting Chance is the sequel, which picks up about five minutes after the first book ended, despite the first book ending well.
Winning Colors is the third book and I enjoyed it as well. I plan to continue reading the series.

I'm sorry, I CANNOT give this book 5 stars, or even 4. It has much in the way of redeeming qualities, BUT there are big problems.

Mostly it is just this: I hate ANY book where you can say, "Oh, the main character made a big mistake. if not for the MISTAKE there wouldn't really be a problem here."

Unfortunately, the careful, hyper thoughtful and well prepared Captain Heris Serrano of the first book has become a bumbler who makes very severe mistakes with absolutely NO good reason. It is just poor writing. The author needed a problem to flesh out an important part of the plot, so she moved her extremely competent Heris Serrano around like a chess piece, forcing her to make errors of judgment and to fail to exercise adequate care in ways that she never would have done in the first book. And not just one initial error that came back to bite her, but compounding that error in a cascade of failure to adequately check and recheck the essential things she would need in order to protect her mission, her crew and her ship.

Lets see: Trust the wrong person through nothing except prejudice? Check. (Whatever happened to "Trust, but VEFIFY?")
Have very good info that someone knows how to use poisons that make people stupid, but not suspect that poison when someone strangely starts acting stupid? CHECK!
Fail to verify that weapons and systems are all well prepared and ready? Check.
Don't follow up on questions and inconsistencies when your life depends on it, because you just kind of forgot? Check.
Be very sure you know what is going on, but fail to consider alternate possibilities? Check.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

Whatever happened to the Captain Serrano who was known to check and double check everything, and was legendary for doing so EVEN WHEN SHE WAS WORKING WITH A WELL KNOWN AND COMPLETELY TRUSTWORTHY CREW? What happened to the woman who instantly figured out where computer taps were, and how they had been placed? What happened to the Captain who could just kind of SENSE danger and take adequate steps?

Frankly, I'm very pissed. It absolutely RUINS the book for me. I hope the author doesn't keep making THESE kind of mistakes.

This kind of leads off at the end of book #1, which had them wanting to redecorate the ship. Then they notice something about one of Lady Cecelia's family members and that starts all kinds of problems especially for Lady Cecelia but Captain Heris is brought into the problem as an expedient excuse. I just hated to think of how long Lady Cecelia was kept out of the way - the ending kind of made up for it but it was still bothering me at the end of the book. Very good book/very good series.

The Story begins with the misteriously stupid behavior of the young prince, who seems to be ill. Captain Serrano and Lady Cecilia deliver him to his father on earth, where Cecilia tells the king about the stupidness of his son and her suspicion that he has been put under drugs to blackmail the king. Because she knows to much of the truth, Cecilia is then poisoned and drugged by the woman who is behind all this, and she seems to have a hart attack. In hospital she is continous drugged to leave her fully conscious without beeing able to communicate. Meanwhile Captain Serrano is called to court because Cecilia has left her the Yacht without the family knowing of it. Bubles (Brun) finds out about the drugging of her Cecilia, and with the help of Cecilia's nephew she rescues her and takes her to the stables Cecilia owns in part, where she is cared for and slowly recovers. Herris Serano is send away on a mission by the king to find out in the nearby high-tech federation if there is some way to heal the prince from his drug-induced stupidness, but has the problem that there are various clones of the prince, so she doesn't know which is the true prince... The story itself is a nice basic to start with, but this time Elizabeth Moon didn't manage to make a good book of it. There are lot's of gaps in the story which are a bit confusing in the first moment, and which are especialy sad because the author could have easily prevented them with half a page of explanation here and there. In addition the story doesn't build up until it reches its final conclusion, but merely flows along for hundreds of pages, with a captivating moment here or there but nothing that makes the book as interesting as the first volume of the Serrano Legacy. The book itself is not really good, but everyone writes something not so good sometimes, and I hope that the next book in the series will be up to the standard Moon set with the first book again.
