Book overview

"The difficult we do immediately. The impossible may take a little longer..."

From the Back Cover

Booted from the fleet as her reward for saving a villainous superior from catastrophe, Heris Serrano has been marking time captaining a rich lady's interstellar yacht. But though she was hired only to chauffeur Lady Cecelia from pleasure to pleasure aboard the good ship Sweet Delight, things happen when Serrano is around.

After saving a Prince Royal in Hunting Party, and deposing the prince's father in Sporting Chance (with the enthusiastic assistance of her 90-year-old employer, who has never had so much fun in her life), Heris has at last been offered a chance for vindication and reinstatement in her beloved space navy. All she has to do is save the galaxy from an interstellar mafia gone berserk.

The first step will be to take one destroyer, two P.T. boats, one ore scow, and -- oh yes -- the space yacht, Sweet Delight, and stop an invading fleet dead in its tracks. Impossible?

Well, it may take some time....

About the Author

New York Times best-selling author and former Marine Elizabeth Moon has written many novels, including the Paksenarrion fantasy trilogy (available from Baen as The Deed of Paksenarrion and also as separate books), the Heris Serrano space adventure series (the first three novels of which have been combined as Heris Serrano), and Remnant Population, which was a Hugo Award finalist. For Del Rey, she has written Command Decision, Engaging the Enemy, Marque and Reprisal, Trading in Danger, and the Nebula Award winner The Speed of Dark. After earning a degree in history from Rice University, Moon went on to obtain a degree in biology from the University of Texas, Austin.

When not writing, Moon enjoys photographing wildlife and native plants, singing in a choir, cooking for friends and family, drawing, reading, knitting, and lying in a hammock pretending to be plotting the next book. She and her husband subscribe to and read several science and medical journals (since they're not near any academic libraries.) She lives in Florence, Texas, with her husband and son.

This whole series is great, frankly, and Winning Colors provides the perfect wrap-up to its first half. The plot feels a more cohesive and more evenly paced than either of the previous two. The ending wraps everything up tidily, and sees everyone we've come to care for taken care of in the best way possible.

Too perfect? Maybe. But it's nice.

It looks like Heris Serrano will finally be vindicated. After being unjustly cashiered from the fleet, she has served as the yacht captain for a rich lady. Even that has had its share of adventure but she has always pined for the fleet. Now she has a chance to return but that chance is a dangerous one.

Her mistress is visiting a planet intent upon buying some horseflesh. While there, Serrano learns of the locals' fears of imminent invasion. She manages to offer some good advice and help them drive off a probe but things fall apart when elements from her own fleet show up and appear to be turncoats. She might be able to save the system from destruction from the real invasion fleet only if she foments a mutiny and takes command of the fleet herself. Needless to say, the turncoats have other ideas.

This seems as if it will wind up the Serrano trilogy. That's a shame. It has been a good series thus far.

Third book of the series with characters you have come to care about. It also introduces a new leading character at the end which had a successful book run of her own.

I read a review where the reviewer complained about all the horse talk. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but there was still a ton. I've never been into horses which I think is because as a teenager I rode a horse once without a saddle. He tried to buck me off, and when he finally stopped, I tried to get off, however, his giant shlonge came out so I had to do a kind of slide/hop back so I wouldn't accidentally touch it with my foot. It's just like a dog (well a lot bigger), it's all wet. Yuck! So, not a big fan. I think they're pretty from afar.

Not enough Heris. I don't know if the author was trying to rope in younger readers but I didn't enjoy it as much as the other books in the series. I'm still going to work my way through, but I'm hoping the future books are more about Heris (or Cecilia as long as there's not too much horse talk).
