Following up their equally visionary Blood in the Streets (LJ 5/1/87) and The Great Reckoning (S. & S., 1993), the authors offer a sweeping analysis of the implications, especially financial, of the information age. According to Jupiter Communications, a research firm specializing in emerging technologies, in the year 2000 online transactions will total about $7.3 billion, and new payment methods such as electronic money will be used for almost half of that amount. The authors explain that such developments are driving a "megapolitical" level of societal transformation similar in scope and significance to the end of the Roman Empire or the 15th-century gunpowder revolution. The key result of this information revolution will be the advent of the "sovereign individual" and the death of mass democracy and the welfare state. This book was written in '97 and it's calling out major technological distruptions going on today! It's astonishing.

These dudes (the authors) called out Osama Bin Laden in '97 as a threat to nation states. He basically called out cryptocurrencies (not how they work, but that they'll arise). Incredible that they could see forward that clearly.

Also, the questions they ask that others don't ask is perhaps the most valuable aspect of reading this book. They engage the role of violence as central to why we have the political paradigms we have. No one really bothers to realize how central violence is to how human societies organize themselves. It's very insightful.

Thanks for writing this, gents. I don't agree with everything in the book of course, but your style of question asking, and the models you present are tremendous.

If you do pick this up, you will struggle through the first chapter. Heads up.

Read it twice. The predictions seem to be shaping up, albeit slower than I had hoped. But then all predictions that I have ever read do not come as quickly as predicted. or hoped.
The alternative news sources here in 2015 carry predictions of their own that seem to be borrowed from this book.

This is a very interesting book with disturbing implications: the authors contend that, in our lifetimes we will see the messy demise of nation states, with the most advanced of the Western democracies falling the farthest and hardest. The grim future they depict is essentially that of Stephenson's "Snow Crash" or Gibson's "Neuromancer".

In making their case, the authors draw an interesting and convincing parallel between today's concepts of patriotism and national duty, and the Church in late medieval Europe.

I'd fault the book for its hyped up rhetoric and excessive repetition of the same historical factoids. Also, the dire predictions of this 1997 book are somewhat undermined by the predictions of the scope of the Y2K computer failures, and also by the odd depiction of Peruvian ex-dictator Fujimori as the wave of the future.

I've read all of the books by Davidson and Rees-Mogg, and was pleasantly surprised by their latest effort. The thing that's particularly inspiring about this book is the opportunity to consider futures that are not promoted by typical pundits and "experts." It's refreshing to be able to not only have an alternate view, but also to be able to review the research that has gone into the analysis, which enables one to see how the model being presented was developed. Even if reality does not show up exactly as presented, it's certainly thought-provoking.

This is the best book I've ever read on economics, politics and history (I don't know exactly which category to put it in). I didn't really like the first 3 chapters, because it was filled with unsupported, somewhat incredible forecasts of changing forms of sovereignty. But by chapter 4 or 5 they started supporting their claims with historical information and I was mesmerized.

The authors claim that the information age is radically transforming sovereignty and restructuring or dissolving "nationhood". It is doing this by transcending the "tyranny of place". When all you need is a laptop computer and an internet connection to earn your income, you can live anywhere (especially if it's a satellite internet connection). You might choose to move to a place where the services provided by government are worth the taxes you pay. If that is the case, then governments, rather than seeing their high talent, high income citizens flee, will start competing for them by lowering taxes and perhaps dismantling the welfare state. That's the general idea, but the authors do a much better job of explaining it than I do. This is one of the most important books that I've read in the last ten years.
