About the Author

Charles A. Lindbergh (1902-1974) grew up in Little Falls, Minnesota. He learned to fly at around the age of twenty, and developed his aviation skills as a barnstormer and airmail pilot. Two years after his trans-Atlantic voyage in 1927, Lindbergh married Anne Spencer Morrow, who would later become a bestselling author. A world-famous aviator, Lindbergh served as an aircraft consultant to the Ford Motor Company and the United Aircraft Corporation during World War Two. He was appointed brigadier general in the air force reserve in 1954.

Yes, the middle of the book is heavy, the famous author takes you on board of the famous airplane, sharing with you his erratically jumping memories from childhood, his repeated struggle against fatigue and the irresistable desire to sleep (and die), his enourmous dificulties in flying and thinking ahead. It is definitely tiring and torturing the readers, in a similar way as the circumstances were tiring and torturing Lindbergh, but if you go through that ordeal, you can say you took part of the first solo translatlantic flight, at least spiritually.

Any aviation nut will enjoy and gain insight from this book! It might be a little slow at times, but getting an inside look into the what it took to accomplish this astonishing and incredibly dangerous feat is riveting! While the actual flight from New York to France is covered quite well in this book, the real gem is Charles' experiences leading up to that flight. Modern day pilots will definitely appreciate the techniques and general craftiness used by these trail blazing/barnstorming aviators.

This is an epic book. Very well written. I had no idea that there were several attempts lined up to fly out of New York. His account of staying away and navigating without GPS was fascinating. The book as a lot of his flight planning data in an appendix. Buy it!

Quite more to the story than I expected. Charles did everything you can imagine early aviators did, and lived through it because he paid attention to detail. How he managed to keep his plane aloft for 30+ hours making the crossing from New York to Paris is a story of that and pure individual endurance beyond all expectations. What a story!
