Clearly and engagingly written and supported with plenty of case evidence and curious anecdotes of various kinds the world round, it also includes the very helpful critical apparatus of an appendix, notes, and index. This substantial book is about as good a general introduction to the field of Ufology as anybody could want, and that is saying a lot.
Good's forceful writing and vigorous documentation fairly light up the sky (no pun intended) and surely even the toughest critics will find themselves hard pressed to find fault with it. He clearly had to develop countless contacts for information sharing all over the world to be able to compile this hefty, useful, in-depth, and highly disturbing volume.
What is the true nature of UFOs? That we do not know, but there has been much speculation about it among many different researchers for a long time. Good includes some very interesting material on this question on pp. 432-424 entitled "UFO Hypothesis and Survival Questions," taken from a 1968 document released to him by the NSA in 1984. The document includes five different hypotheses: hoaxes, hallucinations, natural phenomena, secret earth projects, and extraterrestrial intelligence. Good includes commentary on each of them with his own opinions, affirming the reality of UFOs in spite of the ubiquitous "debunking" efforts by information gatekeepers. Good is careful to note, however, that the NSA writer draws no conclusion about the extraterrestrial hypothesis. About the great debate between the "nuts and bolts" crowd and the "interdimensional-paranormal crowd," (as exemplified by J. Allen Hyneck and Jacques Vallee), the NSA writer says nothing.
Don't believe what the "debunkers" say! This book is a classic, and adds immensely to the credibility of the better UFO researchers and their thesis that UFOs are indeed real, even if we can't explain their true nature with precision! That a few kooky, incompetent people and shysters have said and written crazy stuff about UFOs through the years in no way detracts from the well documented reality of UFOs.
Neither should readers be distracted or dissuaded by the many "disinformation officers" working for various government intelligence agencies or private, shady organizations, who deliberately attempt to muddy the water and manipulate public opinion for their own nefarious purposes. Their preposterous distortions and denials of the evidence for so many years have lost all credibility.
Are governments and shady organizations generally lying about UFOs whenever they can get away with it? You bet! Good's excellent book leaves no doubt about it!
The books is long, fairly dry, and reads with excessive detail. For example instead of saying “the pilot saw a UFO out of the window” the book reads “Pilot Smith (24yrs navy pilot) spotted a silver disk at 34 degrees off the port side at 900hrs the evening of 01/01/1960 on flight ABC123”.
It’s written well, the first half goes country by country and talks about the biggest sightings and incidents. Then half way through it starts about the various agencies - and references everything you’ve learned so far - towards the end it pieces everything together and has an index with images and letters backing up everything.
Highly recommend
