Sorry to say, but this book needs another book first before it gets its 5 stars. You really should start with XP Unleashed by McFedries. That book has a very high percentage of stuff you will want to do. Unleashed builds a perspective well too. Armed with a great perspective and having easily accomplished a host of very useful things from the Unleashed book, NOW you will we able to do something with the unfathomable plethora of info in XP Inside Out. (Surprisingly though, Unleashed is actually better at some things, and more thorough even, on certain topics than is Inside Out.) In short, Unleashed makes Inside Out workable. Just starting with Inside Out and I don't really think you'd know what to do. And like I said, Unleashed even has a couple topics and points missed by Inside Out. But the converse is true too: Inside Out has a few things not in Unleashed. Get Unleashed first -- literally and metaphorically. Totally eat up that book. Now your myriad of possibilities from Inside Out have some rhyme and reason to them. Most of the important things you can get from the Unleashed book though. But for the few extras not in Unleashed, the comprehensiveness of Inside Out, it's CD (see other reviewers' comments), Inside Out would get 5 stars -- but only if you got and ate up the XP Unleashed book first.

First I must take issue with some people who say that XP is completley new and different from 2000(from memory some reviews here say this). I'm a network administrator and we recently upgraded our network to Windows 2000. What does this have to do with XP? Well, in preparing for the upgrade I came accross Mark Minasi's book, Mastering Windows 2000 Server. Eventually we started getting outside clients who were buying new systems with Windows XP preloaed on them so I cracked open my msdn windows xp evaluation and went through the XP Inside and Out book. From reading this book and Mark's it became very clear that Windows XP really is Windows 2000 with a Win 9x/ME influenced GUI. In other words is a refined version of 2000 with lots of new shiny toys that the barebones 2000 was missing (yes, things like msconfig are back). You see, 90% of Windows XP Inside and Out is already gone over in good Windows 2000 books such as Mark Minasi's. The only new information here was learning about the new interface, and seeing what new features have been added into Media Player and the Support and help tools (these make me happy).
The reason why I'm bothering to talk about this is because if you're already a Windows 2000 expert like me, then you probably are better off with buying a thinner book that doesn't go into detail on the NTFS file system or other NT/2000 subjects that would be new for a Win 9x user. Just go get something that quickly goes over the new interface and the support tools.
However, if your coming straight from a Windows 9x environment or don't have much experience with 2000 (NT experience doesn't count) then I highly recommend this book. It goes over a lot of the NT/2000/XP basics that are very different from a Win 9x environment. Heck, even if you are an experienced 2000 expert I would still recommend this book because its very well written and has lots of nice details; you're just not going to be reading much new content.

This book was very useful and helpful to me and I recommend it highly to everyone who is still a loyal user of Windows XP systems. I have a newer computer system now; but Windows XP is still a good system for those who are loyal to it; and it was a major advantage to me while I used Windows XP.

I was very disappointed with this book. It simply does not provide the practical help to XP that I had anticipated. The book contains a vast amount of non-essential information and by the time you discover that the article cannot provide practical help, you have wasted entirely too much time.

I found both the table of contents and the index difficult to use. I alway come away with more questions than answers to some of my technical XP problems. If you are looking for timesaving solutions, tips, tricks, or other workarounds you will be wasting your time with this title.

I bought this book looking for a deeper source of Windows XP information. While I am already very familiar with most versions of windows, still there were things that I had questions about in windows 2000 and xp.
While this book covered a lot of basic information that I already knew, it was not all to waste. I was able to get in-depth information on home networking, tcp/ip, file sharing & security, user accounts, shortcuts, file management, tricks & ideas for internet explorer, windows media player, outlook, handling hard disks, and so on. This book is a windows encyclopedia filled with good examples and things you can do with windows that you could not know about.
Since windows xp has a lot of windows 2000, it does serve as an instructional manual for both OSes.
I have already taken care of a lot of things that I learned from this book. I was able to set up my home network & manage user accounts in a different way. File sharing & security chapters were also very helpful.
Check this out. If you think you know everything in windows xp, think again.
Like the title of the book says "xp inside out," here you will most of the answers to your questions.
Warning: This book is very broad and has a lot of information. I do not recommend it for a beginner or any casual home user, as you will only get bored with so much information that, if you do not understand windows very well, you may find irrelevant.
I do, however, recommend it to serious users who want to take a deeper look.
