I rarely take the time to write a review but I found this book so amazing that I had to make an exception. I have been working in the IT field for 8 years now and I only wish I had found this book much, much earlier. Yes, it is a very big book but every part of it holds valuable information for any person who plans to be a value to his or her organization in the IT field. It is very well researched and contains valuable troubleshooting information within each chapter. If your organization is still using windows 7 and you want to be the best in your field, this book is a must have reference. It will leave you with a very deep insight into how things work and provide the tools necessary to get the job done!

I know, Windows 8 is the new kid in town, but Windows 7 is still prevalent out there and my company (always late adopters) is just now deploying Windows 7 as Windows XP is at the end of life. If you want to know Windows 7, I mean know Windows 7 then you can't go wrong with this. I have Windows 7 Inside Out and the Bible and both of them are also good, but ground is covered here that just isn't in those two books. Once again, those books are good depending on what it is you want to do and where you want to be as a Windows 7 end user. Can one read this work as they would some novel from cover to cover I don't know. but I intend to try. So far I am enjoying it, is it dry in parts, yes but one would expect that of such a work not written for general consumption. When I think of authors who can write really technical stuff and engage you as a reader I don't think of RSK but William James or something. I highly recommend this to those who effort to be more than just a Power User.

This is the standard Microsoft resource kit. Comes with a disk containing several utilities. I can't suggest it for the interested layman though. It is written towards the IT professional as a substantial part of the manual is geared towards migrating windows out to client stations and to centralized planning and maintenance of the networked clients. It is well written and contains virtually all one would need to understand the Operating System workings but again, it spends a lot of time in centralized planning, not something most home networks would deal with. It does reference and explain some of Sysinternal's utilities used to maintain and troubleshoot Windows. These are probably the supreme set of Windows utilities available to date (free for the downloading). Microsoft bought Sysinternals some time back.

This book is of most use to would-be windows admins, with about 1/3 of the book being a blow-by-blow breakdown of how to properly deploy and manage windows workstations across the enterprise from a single location.

Then there's the other stuff of real interest to those of us who want to leverage the windows experience and maybe tweak the performance a little.

There's also stuff that falls in between those extremes, including a section on Powershell scripting.

Coupled with the Windows 7 Inside Out book you would have a very good reference library for this operating system from both the administrator's and user's perspectives.

The disk includes powershell scripts, which is good because examples are my favorite way of learning a new way of doing stuff, and best of all, a pdf of the book itself so I don't have to tote that cinderblock-sized paperback around with me.

Good value for the admin, interesting for the power-user.

I usually have low expectations for used books, but this one arrived looking like it came right off the retail store shelf.
The description said it was missing the CD, but I'm interested in the printed book, not the CD.
Although I am a die-hard XP fan and will probably go to Linux before buying another version of Windows, I do need to work on Windows 7 computers occasionally, and this book should show to be as valuable of a resouce as the Windows 98 Resource Kit and the Windows XP Professional Resource Kit have been over the past 15 years.

As an owner of all previous Windows Resource Kits (except VISTA), it was an absolute necessity for me to purchase! I have always found the Kits extremely informative, and this one is no exception! Admittedly, it is not for the "average" user, as it goes into an enormous depth of technical detail (and weighs a lot!), but for everything a System Administrator needs to know, it is SUPERB! As a retired System Administrator, I have found it extremely helpful already, resolving a few (relatively simple) issues: e.g. Remote Assistance; between different Windows versions, over VPNs etc. Can't recommend it more!!

In my rebellion to Windows 8, this book has been great for the few Windows 7 machines I work with. I kinda hated to let go of Windows Xp since I loved it. Now that I only do Windows 7 (and maybe a 'little' windows 8.1) this book has helped me especially on some of the more subtle things. Now I love Windows 7 a lot. I'm sure 'down the road' I will embrace Windows 8 but probably not till 2020 or so. Thanks.

This is an absolute must have for anyone that will be or is running windows 7. This book is massive think two phone books stacked together. While you can get a lot of this information from MS TechNet, sometimes it is just nice to have a hardcopy resource. I really like the eBook on the CD that comes with this it makes it handy to have on my laptop when I go out in the field. This is not a book that you just chill out and read with coffee. That is unless you are really board. I highly recommend this book for any Administrators bookshelf.
