When Michael Scheuer first questioned the goals of the Iraq War in his 2004 bestseller Imperial Hubris, policymakers and ordinary citizens alike stood up and took notice. Now, Scheuer offers a scathing and frightening look at how the Iraq War has been a huge setback to America's War on Terror, making our enemy stronger and altering the geopolitical landscape in ways that are profoundly harmful to U.S. interests and security concerns.

Marching Toward Hell is not just another attack on the Bush administration. Rather, it sounds a critical alarm that must be heard in order to preserve the nation's security. Scheuer outlines the ways that America's foreign policy since the end of the Cold War has undermined the very goals for which we are fighting and played right into bin Laden's hands. The ongoing instability in Iraq, for example, has provided al Qaeda and its allies with the one thing they want most: a safe haven from which to launch operations across borders into countries that were previously difficult for them to reach. With U.S. forces and resources spread thinner every day, the war has depleted our strength and brought al Qaeda a kind of success that it could not have achieved on its own.

A twenty-plus-year CIA veteran, Scheuer headed the agency's Osama bin Laden unit, managed its covert-action operations, and authored its rendition program. Scheuer spent his career developing strategies to keep America safe, by any means deemed necessary by the presidents he served. It was his job to take available intelligence and devise plans to protect Americans, without considering bias, position, or even existing alliances. In Marching Toward Hell, Scheuer takes on the questions of "What went wrong?" and "How can we fix this?" and proposes a plan to cauterize the damage that has already been done and get American strategy back on track. He lists a number of painful recommendations for how we must shift our ideological, military, and political views in order to survive, even if that means disagreeing with Israeli policy or launching more brutal campaigns against terrorists.

America holds its destiny in its hands, Scheuer says, yet not nearly enough has been done to defend America and destroy its Islamist enemies. This is an eye-opening, alarming, contentious, and ultimately fascinating examination of how far off track the War on Terror has gone, and a critical read in understanding what we must do to save it.

Michael Scheuer loves the U.S. more than anything else, and certainly more than any other country. His style will strike some as rough, insensitive bordering on cruel. The author is willing, paraphrasing his words, to be disliked (falsely, it seems) as an isolationist, an anti-Semite, an appeaser, and immigrant hating. To his credit, he handles these criticisms indirectly for the most part, rather than tantruming on for pages. Page 264 summarizes Scheuer's 1st core action principle: protecting America is infinitely more important that pleasing Europeans and Arab princes; therefore, no-nonsense strength in foreign policy should be the U.S. objective.

Scheuer worries that Islamist leaders and terrorists easily use our open society to find out our vulnerabilities. Energy independence will play one of the biggest parts in shrinking the dangers of terrorists, as their funding sources quickly dry up. Europe's longer-term problem will be demographic. That continent (western half anyway) has been, and will continue to pull in Muslim immigrants to do the work that needs accomplishing. That, with the far-higher birth rates among Muslim populations, will overwhelm the "native" populations in our lifetime. [p182] Scheuer's case about numerous U.S. administrations lying to, rather than leading the public, is the core U.S. dilemma. We underestimate the Bin Laden threat, and do not recognize that current policies augment this problem. This brings up core action principle #2: Bin Laden's, therefore Islam-dom's homicidal beef with the U.S. is precise, calculated, and therefore limited; he says this directly contradicts so much current thinking that the "beef" is unlimited.

The author makes no bones about his disinterest in Israel. His reason for singling out that country, he says, is because the U.S. policy has been terribly skewed toward Israel for decades. His argument here does not have as much support as most of other parts of the book; this could reflect merely his work experience, which obviously allowed him to learn much more about Muslim parts of the Middle East, rather than Israel. Scheuer makes the always interesting, but not original argument that keeping ugly dictators around (Saddam, Assad, etc.), as they act as an efficient proxy to limiting movement of terrorists and other bad actors through the Middle East.

[EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION for the reader to ask Dr. Scheuer, re. #2 principle above: suppose Bin Laden does NOT represent the prevailing view of "radical Islam." Then how would his prescriptions for U.S. foreign policy change?]

I purchased "Marching Toward Hell: America and Islam After Iraq" Paperback – February 10, 2009 by Michael Scheuer to get some inside knowledge of the fighting now going on in Iraq. The Sunni sect of Islam is now fighting after being deposed by the US and it's allied invasion after the Afghan war was pretty much taken care of and the Bush Administration, with VP Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz heading up the Neo-Con element of the Republican Party, pushing overthrow of Saddam Husain's Sunni minority regime which caused the US so many headaches and hassles over Weapons of Mass Destruction. Once deposed and disbanded, the Iraqi Sunni Army, began the fight to regain power and eventually became ISIS, the Islamic State, which has take much of the country back with Islamic fighters from the rest of the Islamic Sunni War. It is ongoing as I write and with surely continue even if over powered by the forces aligned with the Iraqi government forces and those who support the country. The US is still involved after it mostly abandoned the fight after 2011 - 2015 and has supplied air support, while it remains reluctant to place any more boots on the ground, until the Neo-Con element of the Right Wing politics of Washington, once again take power back from the Democrats. This book traces the history of that war and the forces who continue to fight there. I like it.

I recently finished reading a book by Michael Scheuer called, “Marching Towards Hell, America and Islam after Iraq” that I think is just wonderful. After working in CIA for over 20 years, the author is well informed and gives a very clear and honest view of the complex problems of American foreign politics in the middle east. I think this book should be required reading by all members of intelligence community CIA, NSA, and FBI , as well as all members of the congress and all candidates for presidency of the U.S. Absolutely a wonderful book, a breath of fresh air amongst so much confusion and deceptions with great intellectual depth, unbelievable sincerity, humble humanity, and forceful moral authority. In short, it is people like Michael Scheuer that revive one’s hope for the future of United States and hence the cause of democracy all over this world.

His book has also many wonderful quotations like :

“The hen is the wisest of all the animal creation, because she never cackles until after the egg is laid,” Abraham Lincoln 1863

“She [America] well knows that by once enlisting herself under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extraction, in all the wars of intrigue and intrigue, of individual avarice, and ambitions, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom. The fundamental maxims of her policy would insensibly change from liberty to force. She might become dictatress of the world. She would no longer be the ruler of her own spirit” John Quincy Adams, 1821

After I read this book, so many aspects of the complex problems of U.S government and its involvements with Islamic nations became clear to me. It also becomes abundantly clear that without careful and honest political analysis of the problems as presented in this book the citizens of U.S. cannot be expected to see through all the deceptions and soap-operas and make wise and informed decisions concerning their government and the direction of its policies.

Prior to reading this book, I was a fan of Michael Scheuer's work, and I own all of his books, including books he authored the introductions to.

However, I am inclined to agree with the other two reviews, because while I think his theories on the Cold War mentality and the current Islamist threat are interesting, the book is far too provocative with too much invective and war-mongering language for my liking.

He repeatedly praises Ronald Reagan; blames the "national security threat" of an over-dependence on foreign oil to environmentalists, which he uses such invective language to attack; he talks about his desire to kill Soviets; attacks other authors of books unfairly; and too often uses pro-war terms, like "annihilating" the enemy and disregarding the deaths of innocents for American goals.
He continues on to make the case that everyone else is wrong but him and he and only he sees the truth because of his credentials. However, I find this ironic, because he criticizes others that have the same or better credentials than himself, such as Richard Clarke, for what they have written about and how stupid they are, implicitly calling them sissies for not taking a more aggressive action against Islamists despite the consequences of those actions.

The book could have made for an interesting read if he focused more on a theory than attacking those that disagree with him or whom he feels are cowards. Instead, he comes off more like a male Ann Coulter, using such distasteful language and alienating his otherwise loyal readers.

His other books were fantastic but this one really blows: "The only convincing case then for anything going to hell in this book concerns the author's credibility as a serious political analyst," and that's the truth.

If you want to know the real situation in the Middle East and America's 'no win' foreign policy you need to read this book. Michael Sheuar says it like it is, and he holds no punches. If you think the situation in the Middle East is going to improve any time soon think again. This is a book any patriotic American must read and hold his leaders to account. If more writers like Sheuar speak out and make their voice heard it may make a difference.

A book that will change many minds if enough people make it heard.

    Go America!

while america's foreign policies have had an effect especially in regards to Israel in fuelling islamist hatred towards america there undoubted and often stated aim is to creat a muslim world either by killing or converting.
Many islamist leaders or rulers do hate the western culture as it goes against there interpretation of the koran and that is why hard-line rulers try to stop any western ways of life seeping in to there cultures

his sugestion is basically an insular and nationalistic approach to foreign policy, and if anything this has just as bad an effect on american or any other countries saftey and security
