The Future of Strategy 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Strategy is not a modern invention. It is an essential and enduring feature of human history that is here to stay. In this original essay, Colin S. Gray, world-renowned scholar of strategic thought, discusses the meaning of strategy and its importance for politicians and the military as a means of achieving desired outcomes in complex, uncertain conditions.
Drawing on a wide range of examples from the Great Peloponnesian War to the Second World War, Vietnam, and the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gray ably shows how great military thinkers of the past and present have acted strategically in their various ideological, political, geographical and cultural contexts. Looking to the future, he argues that strategy will continue to provide a vital tool-kit for survival and security, but that the global threat posed by nuclear weapons remains an on-going challenge without obvious practical solutions. As Gray boldy asserts, there is no promised land ahead, only hard and dangerous times that will require us to master the theory and practice of strategy to secure our own future.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"In an era of strategic atrophy when were wrestling with a world awash in change, The Future of Strategy provides the best and most relevant guide to navigate our way. Using enduring principles Colin Gray lights the path ahead in a book that stands alone in its clarity and strategic insight."
General James N. Mattis, USMC (ret.), Hoover Institution, Stanford University
"Colin S Gray is one of the great strategic thinkers of the day. In The Future of Strategy he argues that there is a general theory of strategy that applies to all times, places and circumstances. Insightful and controversial, it is a must-read for all students of strategic studies and policy makers who wrestle with the difficult strategic issues of the contemporary world."
John Baylis, Emeritus Professor, Swansea University

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2020The book is on James Mattis’ short list of military officer readings. 150 insightful pages with plenty of references for future exploration.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2017Broought and read because Mattis read it. I found it a bit long in the tooth and was a bit disappointed.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019A man rambles long enough to justify a “full” book- In reality the same theory is repeated over and over
Bottom line - Strategy is the way to accomplish political goals - it has been that way in the past and nothing will change - that’s the whole book
I am not sure why General Mattis includes this on his reading list - it is def one of the weaker recommndations
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2017Essential only to understand the broader thoughts of Gray. Leaves ample space for further debate on strategy and its implications.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2018Other book could tell a better interpretation of this important topic
and so i return the book

As one would expect, a thought-provoking read by a leading thinker on strategy. Grey's writing style is often a bit odd, but a reader can get past that and will he/she will benefit greatly from taking the time to do so.
George WiltonReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 6, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile
Not as good as Professor Gray's better books such as the Strategy Bridge or War Peace and International Relations but excellent as an introduction to Strategic Studies and the directions Strategy may take in the coming years.
MatthewReviewed in Canada on December 25, 20244.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Effort
This good, brief book could have been better and briefer, if the author cared for clear, concise communication. I am used to reading writing which is excessively verbose and poorly structured, but this book challenged my patience. That being said, the content is excellent. I'm pleased that I finished it, but more pleased that I'll never again have to read the word 'triptych' outside of an art history book.
