Great but contains nothing recent. We need a part 2!

Only a small book but gives some insights into the thinking of a mover and shaker who has influenced US politics for a long time.

This book of quotations, published way back in 1995, is a dead-serious collection of Gingrich Wisdom from before his fall from grace. Before he was humiliated by the ethics probes and huge fines, before he led the impeachment of the President (leading, ironically, to new heights of popularity for Clinton and ignominious disaster for Newt), he was still Speaker and still a figure of importance. This volume was a straightforward sampling of his fiery rhetoric served without frills-- as the other reviews indicate, it was red meat for his conservative followers and at the same time evidence of manifest insanity to his critics.

Now, perusing it again as Gingrich sits atop the polls as a GOP candidate, one can't help seeing in it all his Greatest Hits-- the Golden Oldies that his followers still squeal to hear:

"The Left in America is to blame for most of the current, major diseases which have struck this society." (page 56);
"People like me are what stand between us and Auschwitz." (page 33);
"If the Soviet Empire still existed, I'd be terrified. The fact is we can afford a fairly ignorant presidency now." (page 148)

It's easy to color Gingrich as a figure of fun. Given his standing in the polls right now, though, it's hard to find much humor here. Paul Krugman recently called Gingrich "the stupid man's idea of what a smart person sounds like."

Paul: the proof is here.
