Editorial Reviews

Product Description

It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.

This is the restored, 209-minute director's cut of Wolfgang Petersen's harrowing and claustrophobic U-boat thriller, which was theatrically rereleased in 1997. Originally made as a five-hour miniseries, this version devotes more time to getting to know the crew before they and their stoic captain (Jürgen Prochnow) get aboard their U-boat and find themselves stranded at the bottom of the sea. Das Boot puts you inside that submerged vessel and explores the physical and emotional tensions of the situation with a vivid, terrifying realism that few movies can match. As Petersen tightens the screws and the submerged ship blows bolts, the pressure builds to such unbearable levels that you may be tempted to escape for a nice walk on solid land in the great outdoors--only you wouldn't dream of looking away from the screen. --Jim Emerson

This is an excellent movie. I have watched this several times. I had it on VHS, but since I no longer have a VCR player, I purchased it on DVD. The DVD had English subtitles or you could select "English" as the language of the DVD. I highly recommend just using the English Subtitles. The German language is a beautiful language to listen to (I dont' speak or understand German) and I think to get the full effect of this movie, you need to listen to it in German. If you have problem watching a movie with subtitles and being able to follow along , then as stated, you have the option of listening to it in English. The movie follows a WWII U-boat on one of it's patrols. The director did an excellent job of making you "feel" like you were on the sub. You can sense and feel, the dirt, the sweat, the claustrophobia, the fear as depth charges are dropped, the loneliness. You come to know the sailors, their lives, their emotions . I will not spoil the end for you , but what happens in the end, I never saw coming. It is shocking. You will not be disappointed in this move

This is the submarine movie that all submarine movies try to be, this movie humanizes a group of German U boat sailors and tells their incredible story that will keep you on the edge of your seat for every moment. Don't mind the long run time it's totally worth the ride!

After watching a few abridged versions, I was happy to see that there was an uncut version available. I watched all five hours over two days, and enjoyed seeing it in its entirety. If you like "Das Boot" like I do, you owe it to yourself to the uncut version.

I think the worst thing that was ever done to Das Boot was when they re-dubbed the English version and took away the "more saltier" translations and substituted poorly chosen dialogue instead. The poor English translation was very obvious in The Director's Cut ... I was hoping that more of the saltier comments ("Good hunting! You bastard!") were in this complete original series version.

On a positive note, the rest of this piece is quite excellent, with the rest of the dialogue sounding more like the original theatirical release (the 2nd mate's voice, for instance, sounds good, unlike the raspy voice he has in the Director's Cut).

I wish there was an original thetrical release, like they also had on HBO in the 90s, which had all the colorful language ('The swine ... the filthy f***ing swine!") in it. It's a disservice for them to edit all that out. Disappointing!

THE most brilliant anti-war movie I've ever seen. And it does it by showing who soldiers are, and what they do, and what comes of it. No preaching, just tragic realism.
It's sad that only the losing side (Germany) in a great war can truly understand why war is awful.
It's also thoroughly absorbing as a story, with incredibly gripping action sequences.
THIS is the only version to buy, the totally uncut TV miniseries, as opposed to the much shorter (albeit Blu-Ray) director's cut, and the shamefully short theatrical release.

If you are a fan of Das Boot, then this is the version for you. Restored in beautiful Blu Ray it retains the look/feel it had when I first saw this in theaters, but now the colors really pop and the sound is incredible.

If you have never seen Das Boot, then the first disc is the Blu Ray Directors Cut (which adds around an hour to the Theatrical Version) and this is the version you really want to watch because it really ratchets up the tension. Yeah, a lot of sub movies have the same type of scenes with the crew looking up at the ceiling, but in Das Boot you feel like you are one of the crew and the tension as the sub goes further and further into the depth really gets to you. My favorite scene is when Jürgen Prochnow (very underrated actor) has a horrified look on his face as the sub reaches the bottom of the sea....just a punch to the gut. Don't expect the sub to sub battles or neatly coiffed and showered sailors moving around a wide open sub as seen in many black and white sub movies, this gives you the claustrophobia of being underwater at insane depths and opens your eyes to what it was really like on a WWII sub.

Cool extras that take you around the inside of a sub which really let you see that these guys were one on top of the other with no room to move proving that these guys were either really driven or just insane.

Pick this up...you will not be disappointed. I guarantee it.

This is a true story, based on the recollections of the commander of the submarine. It is a fabulous film that illustrates the known fact that there were many officers in the German war machine who disliked Hitler, and the Nazi cause. They were in the war for the protection and preservation of the homeland. At some point in the movie, I almost forgot that this submarine crew was fighting for our enemy. The submarine, which had a small crew compared to battleships, and aircraft carriers, made each crewmember someone who was known extremely well. His fears, likes, dislikes, beliefs, and opinions echoed through the boat. This led to confrontations, occasionally. Jurgen Prochnow is terrific as the captain. He has yet to get prime roles in American movies, but I would like to see more of him. The movie first appeared as a mini-series on German television, which explains why it is so long. I am happy it was not edited to death. I cannot think of a scene that I would want to get rid of. One scene that is unforgettable occurs when the submarine surfaces after torpedoing an American ships. Sailors are jumping off the burning ship, and are swimming toward the submarine, hoping to be rescued. One of the submarine crew sobs as the captain orders full reverse, making it clear he has no intention of saving any of the ship's crew. Later that evening, the mood at dinner time is very somber. Eventually one of the officers speaks up, asking the captain why he did not rescue the sailors from the doomed ship. The captain, also showing discomfort and sadness about his decision, points out to the other officers that they would have not had room for them on the submarine, nor would they have been able to treat the injured Americans. Earlier the submarine captain had shouted in frustration, "Where are the other vessels from their navy, who could save them?"
