This is an amazing story, with wonderful music and great acting - what more do you want? Guns, car chases, steamy sex, mindless entertainment? Not available with this movie! Do you like to ponder the human condition, as it is portrayed in the personal? Would you like the experience of the movie to linger, perhaps invade your thoughts and challenge your ideas? Done and done.

Oh, what's it about? A young man with musical genius and a fragile sense of self, as well as a tyrannical father who, nonetheless, loves him deeply, collapses emotionally and psychologically after his performance of the "Rach. 5" piano concerto, spends years in hospitals and half-way houses, but is eventually rescued and rediscovered. Although he movie could have been tragic or simply "feel good," it reaches a little higher, examining complex relationships and, interestingly, the kindness of strangers, which apparently exists in far more abundance in Australia than in the U.S. The story does not follow a completely autobiographical story arc, but than life so rarely does. Enjoy!

I first saw the documentary 'hello, I'm David" and I was compelled to watch this after. I like that I saw the real David first and then this fictitious version- the performance by Rush is AMAZING. He capture's David's essence perfectly. I felt like I was watching more of the documentary. It was so beautiful. I laughed, I cried, I looked up tour dates, great experience. I can't say enough about how touching it all was.

Very good! If you live a good genius movie you're in for a treat. Deep characters, unblinking look at the crossroads of genius and mental illness, moving ending. In a class that includes dead poet society, good will hunting, and beautiful mind it comes in at the bottom, but wow what an extraordinary class of movies.

Amazing performance by Geoffrey Rush doing David Helthcot's post-electric shock therapy speech patterns. The cinematography, especially of young David's performance of the Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto, communicates the passion of the music and the pianist.

Most fantantastic film, Rush was amazing. Should be more films lick this one. Good to see a film with so much drama in one family, that turned out with a happy ending. You are quick to show films drama, but with bad endings. It's good, and there should be a lot more like SHINE. People would love to go and see more of this type of film. Where have all the good films gone, gone to war like everyone one. Bring back love to everyone, so we may be happy all the time. Michael.

This movie, based on the life of the pianist David Helfgott, was acting at its best. Geoffrey Rush was extraordinary, as were Armin Mueller-Stahl and Lynn Redgrave. In fact, all the supporting actors contributed significantly to the telling of this story. What impressed me most, though, was Rush's command of the keyboard. He really made it seem like he was Helfgott when he sat at the keyboard. His piano lessons really paid off! Having studied classical piano myself, I could appreciate the challenges inherent in playing such an accomplished musician. It was a very moving and beautifully portrayed movie. I highly recommend it.

We were able to watch it through a computer because the format does not work on US DVD's. But with an HDMI cable it was great. Really enjoyed the movie. Good if you are into classical music.

What a great movie, which shows how Narcissistic parents can lead to causing mental illness in their children. Perfect example of a father who tells his son how he loves him, yet keeps hurting him through all his life. The author of this movie must have experienced Narcissism, since it is depicted so well in this movie.
