"There was only one main Exodus of modern humans from Africa, and no more," writes medical doctor and researcher Oppenheimer (Eden in the East), taking on advocates of "multiregional" origins and those who believe there were several exoduses out of Africa. Oppenheimer deftly brings together recent advances in population genetics, climatology and archeology to advance his theory that when groups of Homo sapiens left Africa approximately 80,000 years ago, they first headed east along the Indian Ocean, where they formed settlements as far away as India over several thousands of years. It was only during a respite in glacial activity, when deserts turned into traversable grasslands, that our ancestors headed northwest into the Russian steppes and on into eastern Europe, as well as northeast through China and over the now submerged continent of Beringia (located where the Bering Strait is today) into North America. Much of Oppenheimer's theory relies on recent advances in studies of mitochondrial DNA, inherited through the maternal line, and Y chromosomes, inherited by males from their fathers. The author devotes a chapter to the question of when humans first arrived in the New World, the raging Clovis vs. pre-Clovis controversy. Oppenheimer briefly discusses development of racial characteristics like facial structure and skin coloration, important topics often viewed as too hot to handle. This book will appeal mainly to science buffs; the level of detail may prove daunting to general readers. Essential addition to your human migration library

This is an essential addition for the library of anyone interested in the early global migration patterns of mankind. I already had Steve Olson's "Mapping Human History" (2002); Spencer Wells "The Journey of Man - a Genetic Odyssey" (2002); and Nicholas Wade's "Before the Dawn" (2006) plus a handful of regional genetic histories such as Bryan Sykes' "The Seven Daughters of Eve" (2001) and "Saxons Vikings, and Celts" (2006) and "The Origins of the British" (2006) by Stephen Oppenheimer himself.
In "The Real Eve" Oppenheimer excels at combining DNA, climate, and archaeological knowledge as evidence for his theories of early human migration patterns. He makes a convincing argument for a single migration out of Africa rather than the two-pronged Yemen and Levant migration favored in the other books. He discusses the effect of the Toba volcanic explosion at 74,000 ya on the early migrants in South Asia. Oppenheimer offers new theories on the migration of early Asians and Americans as well as Europeans, all based on the recent (at the time) DNA and archaeology. An interesting theory is that speech is a possible explanation for the greatest increase in brain size (about 2.5X) occurring between 2.0 and 1.3 million ya considering that the increase since then has amounted to about 6%. Ant this occurred in species of both Homo and its sister genera Paranthropus. So language, believed to be the most unique feature of modern humans, might be older than not only our species but our genera. There have been no books published on this topic in over 10 years. With all the new data being collected and analyzed, I think that a new one or at least an update on this one is long overdue.

I've read his other book on the origins of the British people & I also show the DVD in my HS biology class when covering genetics.
I understand there are anthropolgists, archealogist, linguists etc who have problems with things he has said.
But given the faking of various scientific studies & all the junk science that has prevailed in the last many decades, it is refreshing to hear.
And I can make up my own mind about scientific details pertaining to this.
He brings a lot of evidence from all sorts of sources together & presents them, along with other dubious theories.
He gives his analysis as his opinion based on what he has concluded from viewing the evidence.
I find it extremeley arrogant of those in scientific fields who complain that by simplifying scientific explanations for the public's benefit (to understand bcs not everyone is a scientist) somehow negates or lessens the writer's assertions.
I agree sometimes things cannot always be presented simplistically, from what I understand of genetics, not to mention geology, which is my field, this guy's conclusions are well based in light of current evidence.
I think it's a great read.
I also reccomend his other book, The Origins of The British: A Genetic Detective Story.
As an amateur genalogist, I find it absolutely fascinating.

Most of us are curious about our ancestors, where they came from and how they got to where we are now. By looking at the genetic and other evidence Oppenheimer demonstrates how humans spread out from Africa and colonised the rest of the World, leaving a genetic trail for researchers to find. Some of the book may be hard to understand for those with limited scientific background but he does include maps to make it a little easier to grasp.

I have read a few books on this subject and have been an anthropolgy/archaeology "hobbyist" for much of my life. I found this book quite enjoyable and informative.

The charts and photographs were extremely helpful, as well as the introduction and epilogue, which caught me up to the current theories of the day.

Some of the detailed discussions were a bit over my head and tended to slow the book down somewhat, but the end of chapter summaries were particularly helpful in this regard. I found Mr. Oppenheimer's writing to be good and it seemed like he was trying to be instructional and keep things moving. Overall he did an excellent job.

I would recommend this book to others with an interest in this topic. There will be some tougher parts to read, but challenging your mind and vocabulary is part of the fun of reading.
