In 1935, Heinrich Himmler established a Nazi research institute called The Ahnenerbe, whose mission was to send teams of scholars around the world to search for proof of Ancient Aryan conquests. Nevertheless, Pringle (The Mummy Congress), a contributing editor to Discover magazine, gamely steps up to the plate—and has produced a fascinating volume detailing the Nazis' crackpot theories about prehistory and the Indiana Jones–style lengths they went to prove them. Employing a team of researchers, Pringle investigates Heinrich Himmler's private think tank, the Ahnenerbe, which dispatched scholars to the most inhospitable and distant parts of the world to discover evidence of ancient Aryan conquests and the Germans' racial superiority. Some believed their own bizarre garbage; others perverted the facts for personal advancement or prostituted their reputations for the greater glory of Hitler. While it would be otherwise easy to laugh off the Ahnenerbe's ludicrous theories, Pringle argues that the institute provided the "academic" justification for the Holocaust and assembles a powerful body of evidence to that effect. Though one may wonder just how central the Ahnenerbe actually was to Hitler's thinking, when Pringle meets one of the most sinister of Himmler's scholars, his pride about the institute's "research" is distinctly disquieting. As Pringle relates, in 1935 Heinrich Himmler and a small group of associates founded an elite Nazi research institute, the Ahnenerbe. Its purpose was to unearth evidence of the accomplishments of Germany's ancestors as far back as the Stone Age and to convey these findings to the German public through magazine articles, books, museum shows, and scientific conferences. In reality, Pringle points out, the organization "was in the business of myth-making," distorting the truth and churning out carefully tailored evidence to support the ideas of Adolf Hitler. Himmler, head of the Gestapo and the SS, housed the institute in one of Berlin's grand villas and equipped it with laboratories, libraries, and workshops. Pringle examined the microfilm collection of captured German documents at the National Archives and Records Administration in Maryland, the original Ahnenerbe files in Berlin, and 27 other German archives, as well as archives in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Poland, and Britain, and library collections in Iceland and Russia. The result of this copious research is another almost unbelievable chapter in the sordid history of the Holocaust. George Cohen

Magnificent in detail and new information !

A magnificent ,modern examination of how Hitler and Himmler attempted to replace Christianity but "inventing" their version of prehistoric Germanic history and culture and using that as the 'new church' for the Germanic peoples. They also tried to define exactly who the Jews were , and how to rid Europe of them and their culture through mass murder. This is one of the four best books I have read on World War 2 in the past 50 years ( the others being Rick Atkinson's The Guns at Last Light, Anthony Beevor's "D-Day: The Battle for Normandy ", "The Avengers " by Rich Cohen (Jewish partisans in Latvia ) and the Master Plan by Heather Pringle. I've been a fan of Heather Pringle ever since I picked up The Mummy Congress and spent an entire day in Acapulco in my room reading it in preference to splashing about in the Pacific. This book is, of course, entirely different and concerns the efforts of Heinrich Himmler to establish a anthropologic/historical "school" called the Ahnenerbe to indoctrinate young Nazis by advancing the theory of the "master race" and tracking the history of advanced civilizations back to thier presumed Aryan ancestors.

While Himmler's efforts were in themselves crackpot and gathered quite a few kooks along the way such as his assistant, former mental patient named Karl-Marial Wilgigut who traced his family back to the Norse god Thor, more interestingly is that many of the reputable German scientists of the day followed along either through fear of political censorship or quite possibley through shared beliefs.

Throughout, Ms. Pringle pops up with interesting facts such as Hugo Boss' supplying of the Nazi uniforms and Ludwig Roselius' invention of decaffeinated coffee (sufficient reason in itself to dislike the Nazis.)

This book is well worth the price particularly as it presents the acceptance of craziness and promulgation of insanity in modern civilization and deals with an area of the Third Reich which would otherwise be unfamiliar to most readers. Highly recommended.

well researched wolfram sievers himmlers researcher and a member of the SS heather pringle did her research well since 1923 national socialists were vying for power as it spread across Europe with one country after another falling to the wermacht france Netherlands Poland Italy Romania the SS thought they would win,they did not win.once the USA developed the atomic bomb it was all over.however books like this give us a look at the runes the lwgend of the SS the daggers the awards the nice looking silver and black uniforms the power the intising of the young wanting to belong the hitler youth the german girls movement ect ect the hate process indoctrinated to all these people who served the third reich,facinating reading I couldn't put it down goes with Himmler by peter longrich,richard Rhodes dark sun Himmler peter padfield/devils adjutant Michael Reynolds author about obersturmbannfufer jochen peiper knights cross ,knights cross with oakleaves knights cross with swords true real frightening ,read it.

Good Read, but fails to deliver

Although I enjoyed the read, by the end I was left somewhat disappointed by the content. The details of the Nazi occult belief system are glazed over. I understand that this is a difficult topic to get to the bottom of, and many have tried before, but the author seems more at home dealing with the external logistics of Himmler's strategy rather than explaining the ideology that lay behind. When reading of the primeval blond-haired master race I couldn't help thinking of the "Nordic" aliens who feature so regularly in UFO abduction stories and in alien conspiracy books, and how Nazi scientists appeared in Speilberg's "Taken" series working hand in hand with the little grey aliens on the operating tables. No doubt a respected journalist, such as Ms Pringle, would be disinclined to follow that line of thought, but I wouldn't put it past Himmler. He was also inhuman. But more to the point, why would Himmler, or Hitler for that matter, be so obsessed with tall, blond hair blue-eyed types when they so obviously did not resemble them? Did the thought not occur to the author? It must have.

Plenty of Tragic Answers, But

Still troubling as to the whys and wherefores, Nazi strategies and priorities literally are beyond comprehension. I have little doubt that Heather's book has been carefully constructed. What she has left out and what little British/American intelligence have declassified even 60 years later mark a story that is still being told. It is another tale as to when the next chapter begins or, if it already has, the next illustration.
