Product Description

Purple Rain (DVD)

Rock star Prince makes a spectacular feature film debut in this highly autobiographical blockbuster that won both an Oscar and a Grammy award.Headstrong, vulnerable young musician The Kid (Prince) struggles with his own inner demons and with his alcoholic father who beats his mother. But the madness infects his music, fueling a sound that transforms the struggling, young rocker into a star.

When Prince's dazzling and dynamic Purple Rain (movie and soundtrack album) and the hypnotic hit single "When Doves Cry" exploded onto the pop-culture scene in 1984, it seemed there was nothing the purple one couldn't do. The film is basically a feature-length music video, but no musician has ever had a better big-screen showcase for his many talents. The plot is really just a theme (about the son of an abusive father struggling not to continue the pattern) upon which to hang some of Prince's most dazzling songs (including "Let's Go Crazy" and the title tune), and some sizzling live-concert numbers. Apollonia Kotero is ravishing as the romantic interest, and Morris Day and the Time provide some terrific musical competition. Purple Rain is an essential artifact of the mid-'80s pop Zeitgeist. Prince took home an Oscar for the song score. --Jim Emerson

"There Will Never Be Another Like Prince, the Greatest Recording Artist of All Time. Prince Rogers Nelson was—and still is—the gold standard of artistry. A brilliant guitarist, bassist, arranger, and producer, he was more than a visionary. He was an entity unto himself..." - Stereo Williams, Daily Beast.

Never was this more manifest in the music and the struggle that accompanied it that is Purple Rain. With a soundtrack made up of an album where each and every song was on its own a bonified hit (and the album doesn't include anything by The Time, for whom Prince wrote and arranged most of their stuff!), the musical landscape of the film gets intersticed with the pseudo-biography of the young man's effort to release the musical genuis inside of himself and remake a local (and, for us, international) music scene. The performances are occasionally stilted and we're sometimes reminded that these for the most part are not actors...yet, somehow, where that would debase another film, here that truth adds to the authenticity of the music-scape and, ultimately, the journey Prince's "The Kid" takes. In the course of becoming, we explode with joy, tears, and music made manifest all coming together to signify something beyond ourselves, yet linking each of us one with the other. Indeed. Let this film wash over you.

I had not seen this movie in a least 10 years and now watching this movie with Prince dead was a whole different perspective. I still knew every word but I paid attention to new details and just savored every song, every scene. This is not for kids, even though I saw this for the first time when I was 7. The soundtrack is phenomenal. The plot is pretty solid but like I said I was watching this the day Prince died and I was not watching it to critique the plot but to comfort my soul on the loss of an icon. I forgot how awesome it was to watch bands dance as they played their real instruments. Brilliant as always. If possible, you will cry purple tears.

When Purple Rain originally came out in 1984 I was 19 years old and I absolutely loved it. I was a Prince fan before Purpe Rain and I remained a fan after. I saw him in concert twice. I usually don't get caught up in celebrity deaths but Prince's death truly made me sad. He was a brilliant artist and entertainer. After his death I watched Purple Rain again; I had not seen it in years and I loved it again. When he sings The Beautiful Ones it makes me cry. And when he sings I will Die for You and goes directly into Baby I'M a Star.......the way he moves on that stage.....it does not get any better than that. He was one of the great ones.

This is the best movie ever made. Prince Talking to a Puppet. Prince awkwardly kissing. Prince wearing heels. Prince boning in a barn on a bed of hay. Prince Jerking off his guitar into the crowd. All of that plus the best sound track and dancing you've ever heard/seen. What more could you ask for. Buy this for everyone you know.

I've watched this at least 15 times since Prince passed away. I've had the soundtrack in my car as well and have listened to nothing else. I still can't get over the fact that he is gone. I still can't bring myself to refer to him in the past tense either.
