Product Description

Executive Decision (DVD)

Amazon.com

Despite Steven Seagal's imposing presence in this enjoyable thriller, Kurt Russell turns out to be the real star as an American intelligence expert who finds himself leading a strike force against Islamic terrorists who have seized in-flight control of a 747 jetliner with 400 passengers. It's not all that different from Air Force One, but the formula story perks right along with considerable suspense as Russell's cohorts (Oliver Platt, Joe Morton) try to defuse a chemical bomb that could wipe out (you guessed it) the entire Eastern seaboard. John Leguizamo plays one of the U.S. commandos attempting to stop the violent hijackers, and Halle Berry costars as a flight attendant who risks her life to assist Russell's rescue team. As action movies go, Executive Decision marked an impressive directorial debut for veteran film editor Stuart Baird. --Jeff Shannon

Format: Blu-ray
This tense action thriller is a well-directed and engaging film from the days before studios watered down action films to get a PG-13 rating, and is a good way to pass a couple of hours. However, it is sadly hampered by the fact that, in this post 9/11 world, the Blu-ray editions have been pre-cut by Warner Bros. to remove references to Islamic fundamentalism. Funnily enough, I don't remember anyone complaining about it in 1996 when it was first released... Anyway, if you examine the back of the Blu-ray case, you will see quite clearly the words, "This R-rated version contains material different from the original R-rated version". Uh-oh, alarm bells should be ringing. So what is missing?

To begin with, around 10½ minutes into the film, the appearance of the terrorist in the restaurant has been censored to remove the sight of him holding the Qur'an along with a necklace. These items have been digitally removed, so he now appears to not be holding anything, and standing with his hand formed into an awkwardly-shaped fist.

Around 65 minutes into the film, footage of Nagi (David Suchet) gesturing towards- and handling the Qur'an as he states, "it will all be over very soon" has been replaced with footage where he is simply holding the book as he speaks, thus removing the implication of religion and violence going hand in hand.

At 97 minutes, the sight of Nagi praying has been removed, along with -- bizarrely -- two innocent shots of the airplane pilots. A few seconds later, when the airplane telephone rings, we do not see Nagi rising from a prayer position before answering the call.

It may not amount to much, but true fans of cinema will always prefer to see an uncut version of any film. Warner Bros.

This is a pretty good movie with a good cast. I was able to get this for $4.99 so I thought I'd take a chance. The Blu-Ray quality to me was not that good at all. I actually thought I was watching a regular dvd most of the time. I watched parts of the regular dvd I have right after watching the Blu-Ray to see if there was a difference. There really was. This is better than the dvd but still not a great Blu-ray picture. After seeing Avatar in Blu-Ray this can't even come close to that. One good thing is the Blu-Ray is about 20 minutes longer than the dvd. My dvd was only 1:52:00 long & the Blu-Ray is around 2:12:00. The sound seemed ok but I listen through external speakers hooked up to an older stereo system. This is in the 2:40:1 aspect ratio which I also like. There are no extras with this Blu-Ray. Some would have been nice. It looks like they cut every corner they could to put this out as cheaply as they could. For the price, I guess I can't complain too much, but come on guys you can do way better than this. The 2 star rating is for the quality of the Blu-Ray & not the movie. The movie I would give a 4 or 5 rating.

True, going into it, I figured it might be pretty bad -- and indeed: this was a horrid movie! The only reason, I guess, that I didn't give it only one star, is because of its head-shaking, *you've gotta be kidding* entertainment factors.

Don't worry that the following might *spoil* this time-filler; I'd say, read ahead -- can't hurt, at all!

Steven Seagal was fortunate: he was killed off in the first 20 minutes. The rest of us -- everyone who made this ridiculousness and we, who sat through it out of incredulous curiosity -- weren't so lucky; we kept at it, amazed, bemused and appalled.

But then, JUST when you've shaken your head and guffawed yet again, when you thought it couldn't possibly get any worse -- Frank Sinatra sings! Yes, indeed! At the very end, unrelated to anything and out of nowhere, with the hulking wreck of the 747 smoking on the runway, Kurt Russell and Halle Berry go out for coffee (really), the credits start rolling...and...we hear Ol' Blue Eyes singing a little lighthearted ditty ... 'til it all fades (mercifully) to black...

In my opinion (and, I'm in the minority here, as many Amazon reviewers loved this):

The ONLY Executive Decision that SHOULD have been was to NOT make this thing!

I saw this movie years ago "on the big screen".
Just a good ole' fashion thriller populated with good performances.
And if you can "check your brain" at the door, it's good entertainment.
And it's nice to see Kurt Russell with a clean cut appearance instead of
the "Escape from New York" look.

As a side note; Why do these businesses keep insisting on using these cheap
"eco friendly" cases! The first DVD I got was utterly destroyed because they cut
out so much of the plastic cover it just gets crushed in transit.
This is NOT a "use once and throw away" item....so make the DVD case
durable to protect the disc!!!!!

While the plot "stretches" the credibility of some of the scenes (like how does one "pressurize" a vertical tube shoved up against the bottom of a 747 in flight - a vacuum is what realistically was needed here; and how does one squeeze half a dozen or more people into a Lockheed F-117 Stealth light bomber - in real life it's the size of an F-15 Eagle and it's cockpit holds one single crewman - the pilot); nevertheless, it is a great action and suspense film and worthy of both the purchase price as well as inclusion into one's film library! From simply the standpoint of entertainment, it's a great film, and Kurt Russell does a fine job portraying a gov't "thinking man's" action character. An excellent film just from those standpoints!
