Martin Scorsese's brutal black-and-white biography of self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta was chosen as the best film of the 1980s in a major critics' poll at the end of the decade, and it's a knockout piece of filmmaking. Robert De Niro plays LaMotta (famously putting on 50 pounds for the later scenes), a man tormented by demons he doesn't understand and prone to uncontrollably violent temper tantrums and fits of irrational jealousy. He marries a striking young blond (Cathy Moriarty), his sexual ideal, and then terrorizes her with never-ending accusations of infidelity. Jake is as frightening as he is pathetic, unable to control or comprehend the baser instincts that periodically, and without warning, turn him into the rampaging beast of the title. But as Roman Catholic Scorsese sees it, he works off his sins in the boxing ring, where his greatest athletic talent is his ability to withstand punishment. The fight scenes are astounding; they're like barbaric ritual dance numbers. Images smash into one another--a flashbulb, a spray of sweat, a fist, a geyser of blood--until you feel dazed from the pummeling. Raging Bull is widely renowned as one of Martin Scorsese's greatest films, and is an absolute classic piece of cinema in every sense, but does this landmark film have an equally as fantastic Blu-Ray release? Let's see.

First of all, the slip cover that is included is wonderful. Mine came a little dirty, but nothing a little wiping off couldn't fix. One thing I'm especially happy about is that it doesn't have that annoying blue banner at the top that is usually on most blu-rays. It's a straight full art cover and it looks magnificent. Once you take off that cover, you're treated to a standard Blu-ray box molded in red, and features the same artwork and information the slip cover had. All standard stuff, but opening up the box reveals numerous still frames of behind the scenes work with Scorsese and De Niro, and even a few scenes from the movie itself that are all about the size of a postcard. It's small touches like that that really make that 15 dollar price tag seem like a steal, even more so when seeing how most new blu rays that come out are around 18-20 dollars and have even less than that.

All in all, this is probably the best version of Raging Bull you can get right now. It functions as not only giving you the Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy, but it also works just as well as a display piece and a collector's item. if you're a fan of this movie or Scorsese in general, it's a crime not to buy it.

The best sports movie ever made according to AFI's ranking and and the #4 movie overall in cinema history. Don't think I would rank the movie that high in either category, but there is no doubt it deserves all the critical acclaim it received at the time and since. There is also no doubt that Robert De Niro, earned the Oscar he received for best actor. Martin Scorsese performed masterfully behind the camera, but earned no awards recognition...he was a reluctant director for this film, as he did not like boxing, finding it boring. Following his practice of using little known or unknown actors, he tabbed Joe Pesci, a struggling actor at the time who had not worked in film for four years, as Jake's brother, Joey. And Cathy Moriarty got a screen test for what would be her first film role because Pesci liked her photo when he saw it in a bar. When Jake LaMotta stepped into a boxing ring and obliterated his opponent, he was a prizefighter. But when he treated his family and friends the same way, he was a ticking time bomb, ready to go off at any moment. Though LaMotta wanted his family's love, something always seemed to come between them...primarily his bouts of paranoia and jealousy. Amazingly - considering his lifestyle - LaMotta still lives...93 as of this writing. The screenplay was based on LaMotta's autobiography which De Niro read on the "Godfather II" set and eventually convinced Scorsese to take on as a project. The fight scenes are the most brutal that I have ever seen in a boxing film, even though they only occupy @ 12 minutes of film time; and the editing is simply brilliant!

Loved it until the very end. I know it's a classic and all, but the ending was weak and could have really been a chance to put a coda on LaMotta's life, rather than just end it with another "shot" at performing. Also, Scorsese's bible quote to his old professor seemed to intrude on the LaMotta story -- it should have been put after the credits.

The first 99.9% of the film was pretty damn good, though.

The acting and direction are outstanding....but the character of Jake LaMotta, the terribly self-destructive gladiator, is sad with no redeeming qualities. While watching the film you know there are people like that.....who leave you feeling empty. I recall as a boy watching one of his fights with Ray Robinson on television and thinking that he could certainly take a lot of punches......obviously too many.

Bobby D, performance is so frightening real, you could feel the sweat from Lamotta's body hitting your impulse like a wounded fist. His dedication to detail and inhabiting a character drove him to dig down deep into Lamotta's psyche. He gain 60 pounds to fit the boxer retired physique. His portrayal garnered him his Second Oscar.

Raging Bull is one of several masterpieces released between late 1979 and late 1980 that closed the 1970's, perhaps the greatest decade of films ever. Raging Bull was released in the same 12-month peoiod as The Shining, Atlantic City, The Tin Drum, Apocalypse Now, and Being There. Some people would throw in The Empire Strikes Back as well. While mainstream Hollywood was raving about Kramer vs. Kramer, The Deer Hunter, and Ordinary People (which won the Oscar in 1980), the more intelligent, urban Americans were going for the above-mentioned classics. And where are the fans of Ordinary People, Kramer vs. Kramer, and The Deer Hunter today? In the minority, thank goodness.
Every decade has brought a masterpiece for Scorsese. In the 1970's it was Raging Bull. In the 1980's it was The Last Temptation, and in the 1990's, it was Goodfellas.
This film will forever remain as one of the greatest American films ever. Drawing inspiration from Shakespeare's work and "On the Waterfront," this is a movie to cherish for a lifetime.
