Purchased for my wife, whose insatiable love of all things grammar and Scripture defines many a day. I know some of these figures of speech and how they work, but not like she does! She teaches this subject, loves this subject, and lives this subject. You'd really have to look through it yourself as I could do no justice with a formal review. I'll just say this: if my wife likes it, you will, too.

Bullinger, a theologian from the last century, has penned multiple books, including Number in Scripture, my personal favorite. Mr. Bullinger has a way of finding some sort of detail, some kind of wonderful truth, and expounding on it in a way that brings the wonder of it all straight to the front. Both of these are great additions to your personal library and highly useful to your daily study of God's Word.

He said, " Figures of Speech are all over the Bible and the best reference book on them is STILL Bullinger's."
Its important to note Allegorical, Figures of Speech and Literal are all completely different and context must and most importantly be considered to undertand how to interpret the intended message written.
It is a large In-depth book and will take considerable study, but nothing worthwhile is easy.
Still This reference book belongs along-side your other books like Strongs Concordance, Vine's Dictionary
and The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.

All figurative language is used to add specific emphasis to literal text. One can't understand any literary work well without recognizing the figures of speech used and the emphasis added by them. The Bible is no different. Most "scholars" pick, seemingly at random, what passages they want to view as "figurative," without any rhyme or reason, to match their private interpretation.

The ancient Greeks studied the figures extensively, classified and catalogued them. Their work still holds true in modern English, as it did in ancient Hebrew and Greek.

Bullingers work is The Standard. It exhaustively covers the figurative language used in all western languages, showing how to recognize them and the specific emphasis they add. It has examples of each used in the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments. There is no excuse for guessing what is figurative or what it means.

This work is narrowly focused. Bullinger is not trying to justify how he felt the Word should be interpreted. This is a scholarly work about the language.

All who write should study this work to truly understand and master their language. While few people recognise the figures in their language, such as alliteration and metaphors, they are heavily affected by them. Mastering their use will make any author much more effective.

As a student of the scriptures for over 35 years, I have long owned and used the hardback reference of the same title. It is large and cumbersome to carry about, over 600 pages, but the Kindle edition eliminates that shortcoming. The book is written using the King James or Authorized Version of the Holy Bible as its base text. Instead of just being listed in paragraph format, I would have preferred to have had the ability to open up to the table of contents, where all the various figures of speech are listed, then be able to "click" and "go" to that listed figure. Navigation through the piece is a little cumbersome, but having to lug around the resource is a definite plus. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars for that reason mostly. With over 212 figures of speech used in the Holy Bible, having this powerful tool at my fingertips is a great blessing.
I wish you great "mining", as you dig into the depths of your research. As it is written in II Timothy 2:15 "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the WORD OF TRUTH."

If you are a serious student of the Word or of literature in general, this book is a must have! I don't agree with all of E.W.B's theological points, but that's not a biggie - there's so much to learn from him. His research and writing stem from his familiarity with the ancient texts - both secular and sacred - and he's fluent in Hebrew, a couple varieties of Greek, and Latin... probably other languages, too, based on some of his intimations.

Why do you need this book? If you've ever struggled with difficult statements in the Scriptures, then E.W.B's book will help you understand if you're dealing with a figure of speech that should be interpreted somewhat differently (e.g. a hyperbole) or if the statement should be taken literally. He doesn't pull any punches, which I greatly appreciate and he's a true scholar. His book is not an easy read, but I'm okay with that, too, since effort is usually required to harvest some of the greater treasures in life.
