This was a great read. I didn't realize what my parents went through, spending 3 years in a DP camp before they saw the Statue of Liberty. From there they had a sponsor that took the in to assimilate them and legally become citizens. My, my how things have changed. I must have heard my father say "God Bless America" a thousand times as I was growing up. When is the last time you heard an immigrant praise their freedom????

I recommend this book to those interested in World War II, ethnic history, and refugee issues. Most Americans are not aware of this particular group of immigrants, what they experienced during and after the war. When Americans were returning to the US after Germany's defeat, the DPs were still in the war for another five to six years. This also reveals the tragedy of the US alliance with the Soviet Union, which these people were fleeing from.

I'm a little over halfway through this book, and so far, I'm impressed. Mark Wyman really did his research, interviewing many former Displaced Persons. He really gives you a good idea what life was like for them. I'm intrigued by their attitude toward to local Germans while the DPs were in the camps (although some camps were in Italy and France). They really resented the Germans for being well-housed, while they, the DPs, lived in what they considered squalor, Also, for example, Jewish DPs were having trouble finding adequate milk for their babies, while Germans were raising dairy cattle right next door.
