Editorial Reviews

Review

“Kirsten Gillibrand has written a handbook for the next generation of women to redefine their role in our world. With Off the Sidelines, Gillibrand shows that it’s not about getting to the top, or choosing between career and family—it’s simply about getting involved. In politics, in our communities, or simply mentoring somebody: When women work together, we all win.”—Arianna Huffington, editor in chief of The Huffington Post and author of Thrive

“There are moments of immensely appealing self-disclosure that seldom appear in other books of this genre. . . . This isn’t your mother’s political memoir.”
The New York Times Book Review

“Reading Kirsten Gillibrand’s book makes me so proud—as a woman, as an American, and as her friend. She is a beautiful example of what we can become when we are true to ourselves and brave enough to let our voices be heard. This book is intimately honest and deeply insightful. It should be on every girl’s and every woman’s reading list, and every boy’s and man’s, too.”
—Connie Britton

“What do you get when a woman is the third generation of fierce, kindhearted, and brilliant political activists? You get Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who writes irresistibly, helps in real-life terms, and uses her clout to get more women elected.
Off the Sidelines is one of the most helpful, readable, down-to-earth, and truly democratic books ever to come out of the halls of power.”—Gloria Steinem

“Since joining the Senate in 2009, Kirsten Gillibrand has been a fearless advocate for women. . . . Now, she’s turning her attention to getting women involved—a powerful message delivered in her new memoir.”
Marie Claire

“With her new memoir, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand seems to be taking a page out of the presidential playbook. . . . In style, however, Gillibrand’s book differs significantly from previous political memoirs. Hers is a quick read, chatty, candid.”
The Washington Post

“In her poignant new memoir,
Off the Sidelines, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand gives a voice to our nation’s unsung heroes—and shares how any one of us can help change our world.”Good Housekeeping

“Candid and inspiring.”
Dr. Oz The Good Life

“Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, in offering this compellingly personal account of her journey to the U.S. Senate, fulfills a vital public purpose. Writing in a voice that is honest, funny, blunt, and strong, she urges women to get off the sidelines
and start changing the world.”—Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and founder of LeanIn.Org

“My good friend Kirsten Gillibrand has written a book that is just like her: bold, impactful, and inspiring. In these pages, women will learn what is possible when we find the courage and ambition to lead.”
—Gabrielle Giffords

“Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s story will prove instructive to anyone who wishes to find her true north, understand power dynamics, and confront entrenched interests when justice is not served.
Off the Sidelines is required reading for all women who want to change the world and recognize that to do so they must better understand political realities.”—Piper Kerman, author of Orange Is the New Black

“Kirsten Gillibrand is one of the most forward-focused leaders we have working on our behalf, and
Off the Sidelines is an excellent example of inspiring women to make their voices heard.”—Billie Jean King

“A must-read for every woman looking to effect change. Gillibrand’s secrets to speaking up—whether you’re striving for political office, aiming for the boardroom, or simply trying to improve your kid’s school—are powerful lessons for women looking to make a difference. After all, if you’ve worked hard enough to gain a seat at the table but you say nothing, that’s a lost opportunity.”
—Ursula Burns, chairman and CEO, Xerox Corporation

“Senator Gillibrand is a vibrant role model for her generation and makes a strong and very personal case for why we should all care about our government. Her trademark honesty and humor speak loudly to why we need women in the game.”
—Geraldine Laybourne, founder, Oxygen Media and Kandu

I think every man should buy this book and give it to their wives, sisters, or daughters.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is one of only five women in congress to have given birth during her time in office. To say she is a trailblazer is an understatement. She has made it her mission to give a voice to the voiceless. This is her story, personal and heartfelt. But this is much more than just a feel good success story. She uses her story, quite effectively, to inspire a new generation of women to "get off the sidelines" and to take charge of the world around us.

Kirsten's story is unique, because she's a working mom and a United States Senator. Few moms worry about trading schedules for presiding over the Senate and fewer senators worry about breast feeding on the Senate floor. She even acknowledges that she has it easy because her job gives her unparalleled flexibility, and she gives specific examples of other working moms who don't have that luxury. As I read this book, I realize this isn't just a book about her, it's a book about the women of America, of holding down a job and being a mom at the same time, of insecurities over weight and being judged by looks alone, and of the sexual harassment that is a constant in the work place.

The sad truth is that few women has had her advantages in life: growing up in a loving and complete family with two generations of strong female matriarchs, ivy league education, highly paid attorney job in New York city, a loving, supportive husband and countless close friends and mentors. For those without such good fortune, she opens her life and examine critical moments that lead her down her path of public service. She repeats the advice she has gotten and shares wisdom that she has gleamed. She does this for only one reason, because she believes in the potential of American women. And we still have a long ways to go. For instance, even though women are earning more than half of the college degrees, they are still not making it to the upper echelons of decision making in every aspect of society.

I sincerely believe that our society will be richer, our world safer, and our families stronger with more kick-ass women like Senator Gillibrand.

At turns inspiring, engaging, and enthusiastic, Senator Gillibrand's new book is both a recounting of her journey to become New York's junior Senator, and an impassioned call for arms for women empowerment and engagement. Combining both political recountings and personal stories, Senator Gillibrand reveals warmth and honesty, consistent with her reputation as a champion of lost causes.

The book itself is a quick read, clocking in at fewer than 200 pages. It is written with a light candor, with Senator Gillibrand freely discussing her thoughts on modern day feminism, how she finds strength in her personal life, and how she faces challenges both personal and political. The openness is refreshing - Senator Gillibrand holds nothing back as she expresses her frustration and disappointment with the failed vote on the Military Justice Improvement Act, how overwhelemed and impassioned she was as she faced down the difficulties of helping New York recover from Hurricane Sandy or ensuring that the first responders during 9/11 received proper health care and compensation, and how personal challenges, tragedies, and setbacks only inspired her further.

Whether it is discussing the difficulties of giving birth while being an active member of the House of Representatives, or forcefully arguing for the advancement of women's rights, Senator Gillibrand's book "Off the Sidelines: Raise Your Voice, Change the World" should be hailed for exactly what it is - an open and honest glimpse into the life one of the rising stars in politics, and someone who firmly believes in the endless possibilities of women.

Easy reading, humorous, down to earth. Kirsten Gillibrand offers clear insight into the world of politics for women. An honest appraisal of how she has survived. A practical guide for women who may be contemplating entering politics. A good read.

I found Kirsten's book to be a refreshingly honest and insightful look into our political process, as well as an articulate and entertaining read. I support her appeal to women to become involved - at whatever level - in their communities. Speaking as a man, I certainly feel that the males who currently dominate our politics have made a monumental mess of things. I think a woman's point of view and emphasis can only be an improvement and Kirsten has become a perfect example of that. I was a little disappointed that she seems to have succumbed to the fact that we're stuck with money in politics which I think is the root of all our political problems, but I guess that's the reality....at least for now. Kirsten's willingness to speak frankly about her difficulties as a working mother, and her strategies for coping, should be an encouragement to other women considering involvement. One hopes sincerely that she is able to maintain her determination to fight for what she feels is right and important for the country, regardless of the pressure she will face from many of her peers in congress.

You really should read this book!

Kirsten Gilibrand has told her story is a genuinely vulnerable way. I share her perspective as a working mom. My own life experiences are so similar. I am truly inspired after reading this book. I am affirmed in my goals to participate in promoting the common good, in holding our government representatives accountable, to promoting more women in office and to help the young people in my life make their dreams a reality.

While I personally like and respect Kirsten Gillibrand, and most of the book was interesting, at the end I was left with a hollow feeling. I felt that a lot of really important information was left out. She certainly is an advocate for getting involved and finding your voice, but she had a unique background in politics and the backing of her family and husband which not all women have.

I wish her continued success and I must say she is much more impressive in person than in the book.

If you care about women's rights, gay and lesbian rights, veterans and military servicemen and women's rights, 9/11 first responder healthcare, ethics or morals, you owe it to yourself to read this book. Kirsten Gillibrand shares a polarizing recount of her battles with congress and the senate from a personal and professional perspective, leading the way for some of this past decade's biggest political wins sans the media circus that surrounded these highly publicized events in America. Reading her perspective on the Tuscan shooting and her experience with Gabby Giffords in the hospital room, left me in tears while reading; as when she described the others who lost their lives during that horrific event. Her recount of these and other events always made me feel like she was speaking to me as if I was in the room; candidly and respectfully. Always honoring those she mentions in her life who brought her to where she is now throughout the book, Kirsten is shining example for why we need more women in high places in government and in other professions. She brings compassion and reason to the table, something that is blatantly lacking in in politics today. Or you know, you could not read this book, and go tell your mom, aunt, sister, or wife that you don't care about their opinions, their hardships, or their sacrifice.

Reviewed in France on December 2, 2014

I like this book. I got it to find out about my senator. At first, I thought Gillibrand was too "goody two shoes". Then I began to appreciate her ways of working. She's real, smart, organised and has a knack for building bridges with staff, colleagues and opponents. I can well use her methods in my own committee work.
