I purchased this book as a birthday gift for my sister who, besides sharing a birth date with me, is also addicted to genealogy. I did glance through the book before sending it on to her and though it is dated, found some sections are relevant no matter the date/year. I especially liked the section that referred to problems encountered browsing governmental records, e.g. uncooperative courthouse employees. Been there, did that. Our birthday is still three weeks in the future, so I don't know how she will like the book; but if our positions were reversed, I would consider Collecting Dead Relatives a great, enjoyable birthday gift.

Colledting Dead Relatives is one of the funniest books I have ever read! The author tromps heavily on the toes of many of us genealogists but is all so true. Her personal adventures in tracing her family tree, pre internet days, is a riot from start to finish. We meet every type of County Clerk or librarian; we see ourselves when we fought for microfilm machines; and shared her adventures in walking through cemeteries. She has an uncanny way of making us come face to face with ourselves as we also shared some of her adventures. An easy read, a funny read - you won't want to put it down!

I am so glad that I ordered this book. The author has shared funny anecdotes and thoughts about genealogy research and the people one encounters when doing research. While reading, I found myself nodding as I recognized people I've met along the way, situations I have experienced, and thoughts I have had. This is an enjoyable read, and a great reminder even looking for one's ancestors can bring fun and laughter if we just know where to look!

This is a very funny book. I've reread it a couple of times. Even though most genealogical research is now done at home via the computer this book about traveling around the U.S. to find ancestors is still relevant. The author describes a number of different types of researchers she met on the way. Those who won't share, respond to inquiries or are just plain disinterested are all discussed. Plus uncooperative clerks at courthouses, etc. Also, there are lots of helpful hints if you decide to "go on the road" looking for family. If you've been researching for a while you will appreciate her stories. If new at the game you'll be more prepared for what may await you on your journey. Highly recommended.

Very funny for those of us who were doing genealogy research way before the age of computers, when we had to spend a lot of time in libraries, court houses, genealogy meetings, etc. The humor might be lost on recent computer-age genealogists. Very enjoyable for me!

I expected a light hearted guide to genealogy. It read more like someone trying to be a stand-up comedian using their family research experiences. She never pulled it off. It wasn't funny enough to lure you into the interesting arena of genealogy. Her hyperbole in trying to be funny made it less helpful for genealogy folks. Maybe I gave up too soon.

I thought it was rather slow to get here but it was in perfect shape. I would order again. The price was certainly right.
