This work focuses on a particular method of organizing research materials. Its unique system of organization takes you from the preliminary stage of your research to the final presentation of your work as a report or a book. The system, an outgrowth of the Dollarhide System of Genealogical Records, enables you to manage a genealogical project with maximum ease and efficiency. The first section of the book covers the three basic types of the projects--pedigrees, lineages, and descendancies. The second section tells how to organize notes and keep paperwork to a minimum, while the third section shows the various methods of cross-referencing notes for purposes of retrieval and evaluation. Section four describes ahnentafel numbering, and section five descendancy numbering and the merits of the three main numbering systems--the Register, Record, and Henry systems--plus Dollarhide's own combined Ahnentafel/Henry numbering system. Then there is a section on the applications of computer software to the project and a section on diagramming techniques and methods of presenting a pedigree or descendancy in polished form. Finally there is a set of nine master forms to be used in this work, and they can be easily photocopied and used as often as needed. Updated in 1999, this edition of Managing a Genealogical Project features new material on computer software and CD databases.

There are some books so general you wish you had gone online and looked at the beginning genealogy information, saving yourself the cost of the book. The number of people selling used copies should have been an indicator to me of a read-through-once book and then sell it. Seems Genealogy Publishers not keeping up-to-date as of the latest edition 1999. Nothing about color-coding filing system. Oh well, purchase and learn. Get your beginning genealogy inspiration in another form with more density.

This is one book that you should not try to do without. This book actually tells you have to manage the paper that you generate while doing your research for your genealogy. Dollarhide knows his stuff, and he's done a great job in putting this small but highly effective book together. It is magazine side with many, many forms that can be reproduced. He helps you with every step along the way.

I bought this book thinking it would give me some more insight into doing my family trees. It's find for those that are doing everything by hard copy and notebooks. For anyone that is using Family Tree Maker, Roots Magic, Legacy, etc. and connecting to Ancestry, FamilySearch, or any of the other only Databases this book is way out of date.

I wanted to give this a 1 star but it does have some useful information for some people.

This updated book is one that I refer to frequently to assist me with a one of a genealogist's major problems, "Now where did I put that information about John Doe"? The author shares his system for organization of the various types of genealogical information that will inundate anyone who has a serious interest in family history if this info is not filed using a logical system. Bill Dollarhide has developed such a system, which he explains in detail in a clear and concise manner. He also explains other organizational systems in use today and lists their pros and cons, allowing one to choose the system best suited to their needs. I recommend it highly.

I think this book is a huge help for those just starting to get into family history. It shows you how to keep all of the mounds of paper organized and to avoid backtracking and duplicate research. Even if you have already jumped into the search, it teaches you how to get things in quick order. It's simple once you get it down with the advice in this book.
