Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
This classic handbook has been completely updated to include all major developments since the original edition ( LJ 6/15/74). Three new chapters cover genealogical evidence, personal computers, and family historians. The bibliographies have been updated as well. Greenwood's pioneering contribution offers a detailed examination of primary records: vital, census, probate, land, court (adoption), church, military, cemetery, and wills. Librarians will appreciate chapters on other types of research, especially library research. Ronald A. Bremer's Compendium of Historical Sources: The How and Where of American Genealogy (Progenitor Soc., 1986. 3d ed.) and Arlene Eakle's The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy (Ancestry Pub., 1984) are similar all-in-one genealogy handbooks. With this edition, Greenwood has reaffirmed his book's position as the outstanding text in American genealogy, and it remains the benchmark against which others will be judged. This modestly priced core collection reference tool should be in every genealogical library and in other libraries where there is an interest in genealogy.

This book was written before records were so readily available online, thank goodness they are now, so a lot of it is out of date. I am only about half way through it but I have learned so much already, for instance: names & nicknames that were used (like Polly & Molly for Mary), family relationships ( junior was not necessarily the son of his father with the same name, he was more likely a nephew) , abbreviations & so much more. There's even a chart on when the territories, if they were, & states became states & when their 1st census was. It's just chock full of little gems like that that make this a book well worth having, even for the history if not for genealogy.

I have to admit I am disappointed in this book. It was recommended by a lecturer for a Genealogy class and its the driest book I have ever read. I've read physics books just because I am interested in the field and this is just facts droning on endlessly. Can't say that I have gotten a lot out of it and its only one of two books that I have never finished. Its just technical and to many facts to keep straight. Would not recommend this for the beginner in Genealogy.

A researcher suggested this book for beginning genealogy twenty-five years ago. I've been borrowing it from the library. Thanks to Amazon, I have my own copy now. This is a great, well-written book and still the one I go to first.

I've enjoyed reading and sing this book. Discovered things to look up where I hadn't thought of. Would recommend to someone starting their families genealogy searching
