Without proof of some kind, a family tree is just hear-say. Don't frustrate your descendants! After doing the research and finding out some very interesting facts about your ancestors, make sure you cite your sources so they know there is proof. This will save everyone from having to reinvent the wheel over and over. Try to make copies of the documents also. So many things can happen - courthouse fires, flooded basements, silverfish snacking on papers on a back shelf - save your history and make your descendants glad you were their ancestor. This book is great for anyone serious about their genealogy.

In the olden days of genealogy research we just jotted down names and dates. Now we know we must provide footnotes to the documents we've reviewed to arrive at our lineage assumptions. Assumptions they are, because they are based on the "evidence" at hand!! Elizabeth Shown Mills details sound guidelines to follow in her discussion of evidence!
For beginners - to get off on the right foot! For advanced - to verify your citations are as definitive as possible!
"Research, evidence, citation, and analysis are inseparable. Evidence is the vehicle that moves our research from curiosity to reality. Citation and analysis are the twin highways that get us there, smoothly and safely.
Evidence! tries to strip away much of the confusion that researchers experience in this adventure. It offers a road map for beginners, who hope to avoid mistakes, and guideposts for the advanced, who already appreciate the need to map their own course precisely." (Genelaogical Publishing Company.)
Elizabeth Shown Mills is a well-regarded, nationally ranked genealogy lecturer and author. Applying the principles discussed in this book is like having Mrs. Mills' critical evaluation of your genealogical research to date. What you'll learn from this book will undoubtedly shape your research strategies in the future!

This work is now a standard reference for genealogists and for good reason. It provides up-to-date citation standards for any genealogist from amateur to professional. Family history that lacks proper sources and citations is not worth much. If we would stop for a moment in our internet frenzy of finding more and more information, faster and faster and just take the time for good sourcing, our final product would be worthwhile and credible. This is one book, along with dictionary and thesaurus and Bible that I go back to again and again. If you are a family historian, you should have it on your bookshelf also--within arm's reach.

This book is above my level of experience however that does not diminish it’s valuable information. It’s just not something that is needed by this average researcher. I think it would be more value to the serious writer needing to know about footnotes, bibliographies and indexes.

This is an excellent source for learning, as a genealogist or family historian, the study of citing evidence and how to analyze . I refer to it often.

This was a help in citing sources in genealogy, but the analysis part was review of what others have said. A very helpful book.

For advanced family historians
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 25, 2009Verified Purchase
I was not sure about buying this book because it is based on USA genealogical research. However it is the basis of the source and citation system in Family Tree Maker 2009 so I took a chance and bought it.
This is not a 'How to do family research' book. It is a specialised, advanced guide on two subjects - citation and analysis. Very relevant if you want to publish your work either on-line or in book form for others to use reliably.
The principle behind most of the guidance in this book is that analysis (i.e. working out why people behaved in a particular way; the real reason for family research) is based on well documented sources. After all, somebody else might want to do the further analysis.
The book is in two broad parts, guidelines on documenting sources and guidelines on analysis.
The book describes and defines advanced guidelines that are mostly universal, they apply just as well to UK family historians. The examples are US based but the principles they describe can easily be understood and applied here. There are a few guidelines to US sources which, in my case, are not relevant simply because I have no family in the USA, but they may be useful to others.
The book is readable in parts, in others it is a reference manual. Advanced terms and concepts are not explained, the author assumes you know these or can find them out for yourself. It is concise, no wasted waffle, no payment by the number of pages in your block buster.
Two items on the downside and therefore only four stars.
First, the book only makes passing comments to family tree and word processing/publishing software all of which is becoming very advanced and helpful. A bit more on these would have been useful.
Second it is very expensive. To be fair this is a text book and they don't come cheap.

Do not buy unless you are doing USA research
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 25, 2014Verified Purchase
Very disappointed by this book, waste of money. As a professional Scottish genealogist, this book is useless as it only includes US citation examples and it is extremely out of date. Relatively expensive and not very readable. If you are not doing research in the USA, do not buy this book. Also very disappointed as the author has such a good reputation.
