Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
New tools and materials have been developed for the exploding memory-book market, and it is useful to have instructions for using them. Here are two guides to the craft techniques involved in creating one's own memory scrapbook. Carter's book uses a question-and-answer format with illustrations and examples. The Vanessa-Ann book has chapters and sample projects for techniques such as stitching on paper and using computer graphics. Public libraries will welcome both.

I had borrowed this book from the library. I am always looking for new and different ways to do scrapbooking. What I liked about this book was the fact that they walked you through the basics and had different techniques I hadn't used before.Although I have been scrapbooking for several years, I had not taken any classes to show me how. This book is good for beginnings and for others who have done scrapbooking for years. Just the illustrations of the layouts are worth the money for this book. I liked it so much that I gave my daughter one for a gift too. I really think it is worth buying. Although I first borrowed it from the public library, I realized it was that good that I wanted my own copy.

Being a newbie and excited to begin my 1st book Ms. Carter's instructions has helped me immensely. I particularly liked the "list" of needed items and her design tips. Thanks, Ms. Carter.

I just picked up this book at the library. It is too outdated to provide a new user guidance with scrapbooking today. Had I decided to start scrapbooking back when this book was published I would have been scared off! It makes the whole process seem incredibly time consuming. This book was written when digital cameras were not being used as much as they are today so all the info on photography (saving negatives, going to a shop to print and resize photos) does not matter anymore. Hand cutting and trimming is no longer necessary as there are great cutting machines out there. The author needs to review the rules for using punctuation, as her samples are rife with errors. She brings up journaling a lot but she leaves out advising you to name the subjects in the photos. A scrapbook documents family history. You, as the author, knows the subjects in the photos. However, when someone of a future generation finds the scrapbook in an old, forgotten box in the attic100 years from now, she isn't going to know who's in those photos.
If you are looking for a good book to learn the basics of scrapbooking, this one is not the one you should start with.

This is a good book for beginners in that it covers all the basics without getting too fancy. It covers techniques such as using decorative edge scissors, corner and craft punches, how to use die-cuts and creative lettering, rubber stamps and embossing. My only BIG complaint is that it is always refering to another technique on another page, so I constantly have to flip back and forth. For example, in Technique 9 (how to use die-cuts, the first 3 steps refer to other techniques. Aggravating! Otherwise, good book for BEGINNERS!

As someone who has been scrapbooking for several years I find this book plain with only a few good ideas. It may be because I learn towards scrapbooking with a more elegant/tradional style rather then the cutesy style with die-cuts, etc.
Though this book is not the best for me it may be a good book for a beginner who wishes to get into scrapbooking. You might want to give it a try but check it out of your library then invest in it if you like it that much.

I just started scrapbooking a month ago, although I have an extensive background in art. I picked up this book thinking I would get a lot of ideas and tips that would help me add pizazz to my pages.
All of the ideas presented in this book were things I had already come up with on my own. I was very disapppointed in this book, because when I'd thumbed through it in the store, I really liked the page layout style they'd used in the examples, but the tips and theory behind them were too simple for me. I took it back and exchanged it for "Mastering Scrapbook Page Design" by Michelle Gerbrandt, which is a much better resource for anyone from a beginner to an experienced scrapper.
