Portugal had an important role in the exploration of the world, making the shortage of adequate English-language reference tools on the country a serious problem. Consequently, this historical dictionary is a significant addition to any library with collections on Europe. Wheeler (modern history, Univ. of New Hampshire, Durham) is one of the most active U.S. scholars promoting the study of Portugal in this country. His work is different from, and more usable than, the traditional historical dictionary because the entries are generally longer and of greater depth. In addition, their high quality shows the author's knowledge of his area. Wheeler includes an extensive subject introduction, a historical chronology, and a list of monarchs, presidents, and prime ministers. Of special note is the 100-page subject bibliography. An important reference source for academic and some public libraries.

Portuguese history at your fingertips

This is the most useful book I have come across for quick reference on facts, people and dates in the history of Portugal. The book is also packed with other good information, lists of books etc on all sorts of topics to do with Portugal. This is a loyal friend I always turn to for reliable and easy-to-access reference. With this book in my bag I feel I have the history and culture of Portugal at my fingertips. You who are reading this review, I hope you can benefit from this book as much as I have.

Too expensive for too little

While I would like to recommend any book (being an author and retired teacher), I can't recommend this book. If it sold for half or a quarter the price, then maybe. Quite honestly, when you read it it feels like a precis of the work you find on Wikipedia. In fact, the material on Wikipedia is better than you will find in this book.
