This book far exceeded my expectation. It is a spectacular overview of Irish immigration. In addition to clear text and beautiful photographs, the book includes actual replicas of documents such as letters, posters and postcards that bring to life the lives and struggles of the families that came to America for a better life. My husband and I held these documents in our hands with almost a sense of awe. It was living history and the book is my favorite purchase of 2019.

This is a great book to get for yourself or for anyone interested in a quick but very compelling read about the history of immigration from Ireland to America. I'd particularly recommend it for young readers, as it contains a wide assortment of compelling pull-out letters and other "souvenirs" showing everyday items from and about those brave immigrants who left behind their homeland, its poverty, and starvation for a more hopeful (though far from easy) life in America.

I'm writing a novel about two Irish immigrants, Aislin and Liam (a married couple), and this gave me a lot of information that I couldn't find on the internet. Having ancestors from Ireland and Scotland--and having the red hair and Scottish last name, Johnston, to prove it--I really like learning about what life might have been like for them back hundreds of years ago. I think that if you want to learn about how life was back then from their days in Ireland all the way to their days in the American land, this is a great source to use, whether it's for a research paper, writing a novel (as I am), or just learning about people who left Ireland for the promised land. It's thorough, provides plenty of useful information, and has a lot of great extras, like letters and posters and more from the 1700s-1800s. If you're interested, buy this book.

I love this book! I first saw it several years ago but didn't have the money to buy it. Then I wished later I had bought it (this was before Amazon came along). Thank goodness for Amazon because now I have this wonderful book! It's an "interactive" book, with pull-outs like a sample of what a letter from Ireland to the US was like, and a sample of a ticket at Ellis Island. That sort of thing. It's interesting! All Celtophiles should have this book!

The book has copies of actual letters tucked in envelopes on different pages. I loved the idea. I couldn't read some of them as they had faded through the years. But alas! They are reprinted at the end of the book. It was a good follow up to Out of Ireland. Thank you, Mr. And Mrs. Miller.

loveliest book ever the detail is amazing!!

I have wanted this book for ages and when i found it on amazon it was only available second hand. Very impressed with delivery arrived very prompt well before the estimated dates given. even though it is second hand it was in immaculate condition and everything was intact- i was worried that because the book has extra bits like letters and inserts that some may be missing or damaged but this was not the case it is perfect! As for the book itself it is a delightful rid of a story that every irish child was brought up on but even if your not irish its a fantastic piece of history and has letters and cards to pull out and read! A delight!

Wonderful book giving a real insight to the Irish immigrants to America, lovely personal touches with almost every page containing reprints of letters and maps etc. Arrived in pristine condition apart from a heavy handed temporary postman determined to get the book through the letterbox (he couldn't) but dented and scraped the top edge, so annoying! Didn't affect my enjoyment of this original book though.
