Blue Note: Album Cover Art Paperback – October 1, 2002

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 59 ratings

Smaller in trim size, greatly expanded in content, this compendium of Chronicles classic Blue Note books (50,000 copies sold) is now an appealingly chunky paperback. Blue Note remains one of the most influential jazz labels of all time, and its cover art is a virtual time-capsule of cool. Now comprehensive, Blue Note: Album Cover Art gathers nearly 400 of the legendary covers, spanning the 40s to the 70s, and features the greatest work of legendary Blue Note art director Reid Miles. Simple and sophisticated, moody and alluring, these covers continue to influence designers and excite jazz aficionados today. "One glance," as Esquire said of the original edition, "and youll know where the essence of cool remains."

If you don't have the large two-volume Blue Note cover books settle for this compact version. Admittedly the reduced size does not quite have the impact of the originals (the two books were just a bit smaller than LP covers featured inside) but I don't think it lessens the impact of these great designsMost of the work is by Reid Miles and over fifteen years he created about five hundred LP covers, frequently using the gutsy black and white photos of musicians taken by Francis Wolf. There are two stunning books of his work: The Blue Note Years: The Jazz Photography of Francis Wolff and Blue Note: Jazz Photography of Francis Wolff (they are actually different books). Many of these great photos have a black background because they were taken in the windowless studio of Blue Note's main recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder.Considering that plenty of these cover designs are well over forty years old they still look fresh and dynamic. I think it is because they are really quite simple, a great photo, straightforward typography and perhaps Reid Miles secret: the clever use of space. Flick through the pages and cover after cover have empty areas, these helped to create the Blue Note look. Most LP covers were usually designed to avoid empty space, "fill that hole with the track titles" was no doubt a common cry in record company marketing departments. This compact paperback is a lovely reminder of some wonderful work by a designer who created so much from so little.***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.

My goal is to observe BLUE NOTE cover designs as reference, typographic and image composition. This book filled with covers serves that purpose well. The book is also a record cover size scale, so some of the spreads give great reference to proportion.

Great collection. If you're looking for inspiration in the use of color, type, layout, photography, or even illustration, you'll find it in these album covers. The designers of these covers really had a unique luxury, which was having a relatively large and fixed-size canvas, in which only a small amount of information needed to be conveyed, and they used it to great effect. The covers range in mood from cool to jubilant, but are always bold.

As a web designer, I see seeds of ideas for navigation, page layout and colorways.

My only complaint was the small size of the book - but I see from other reviews that there are similar full-size collections as well.

I have two copies of this great book, one i keep to look at and read and enjoy each moment of the blue Note Records of the fifties and sixties, the other one i dismantled and used as great posters in my Jazz listening room. The photographes say a lot about an era of Jazz with the greats that is difficult to repeat. I recommend this book even if it has some problems in binding. Remember it has been out for a long time and the glue might have dried up... Maybe i should buy other copies and throw them around the house everywhere!!!

This is a fantastic book of many of the album covers from Blue Note. The book presents them in vivid color with nice thick pages. The album art isn't chronological, but you'll soon forget that as you look through the book. An easy 5 star recommendation here.

Large selection of album covers from Blue Note though the book is fairly small, the images are generally CD sized or less but it is still a pretty decent quality record cover book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Triste anniversaire....

Blue Note: Uncompromising Expression: 75 Years of the Finest in Jazz  ), alors on doit se contenter de la version "économique" de "Album cover Art : the ultimate Blue Note collection" qui reprend en petit format les deux volumes grand format depuis longtemps épuisés : "The cover art of Blue Note records vol 1  The Cover Art of Blue Note Records: The Collection  et vol 2  The Cover Art of Blue Note Records: v. 2  , dont on pouvait espérer la réédition .
