About the Author

Spider Robinson, winner of three Hugos and a Nebula, was born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, and has been a Canadian resident for 30 years. Holder of a bachelor's degree in English from the State University of New York, he worked as a folksinger and journalist before publishing his first story in Analog in 1973. He now lives with his wife Jeanne Robinson (co-author of the Hugo- and Nebula-winning Stardance trilogy) on an island outside Vancouver, B.C., where they raise and exhibit hopes.

Eleven of his 31 books are set in Callahan's Place, a fabulous tavern founded by a time traveler, where puns flow as freely as beer, and smell far worse. The most recent is
Callahan's Con [Tor July 2003]. He has contributed a regular editorial column, "Future Tense," to Canada's national newspaper, The Globe & Mail, since 1995. In 2000, he releasedBelaboring the Obvious, a CD of original music with the legendary Amos Garrett ("Midnight at the Oasis") on lead guitar, and in 2001 he was a celebrity judge at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.

He moved me more than even Mr. Heinlein did. I read this book with fear. I stopped reading his books after the one with the telepathic twins when they all got made bulletproof. That book broke me and it has taken this long for me to muster up the courage to try this one. No other author has ever done that to me. I have healed enough now to reread his other books and catch up with the ones I missed.
Shared pain is pain lessened.

I love these Callahan stories. It took me a while to realise why I love them. You see, Callahan's is the current reincarnation of the legendary Inn at the Crossroads. It is a place where travellers and strangers and seekers and lost souls can tell their stories. Nothing is a surprize at Callahans, for anything can happen there. For the price of a drink you can tell your story- and have it respectfully listened to by people who will try to help you if they can- or at least sincerely try to understand. Needless to say, this is not your modern sports bar....
Did I mention that the clientel of Callahan's are not just your ordinary Outsiders? It is not at all uncommon for time travellers, aliens, mutants, to cross the threshold. As long as you don't pull any rough stuff there, all are welcome at Callahan's.
The funny thing is, places like Callahan's do actually exist. You don't find them, or even here about them, unless you really need to find them. They are havens outside the world where good fellowship, respect, and empathy still maintain a toehold in this brave new world.
If you'll excuse me, I feel a need to hurl yet another glass into the fireplace....

Fans of Mike Callahan and Jake Stonebender and the rest of the crew will no doubt devour this latest installment, however new readers will be lost because of all of the in-jokes and references to past stories. All the more reason to buy ALL of the previous installments!
Callahan's Key, while bringing back all of our dear and lovable friends, left this reader wanting more. While everpresent, much of the crew from Callahan's Place and Mary's Place had only cameos in this story. Quite understandable, since the cast grows with every new installment, but it made me yearn for more of the short, poignant stories that originally captured our attention and pulled on our heartstrings.
This is not to say that this book is lacking in any respect. Spider Robinson is a genius and his works never never fail to entertain. You can't go wrong with this or any other of his stories.

It describes a free-wheeling lifestyle, people who love mucis, have saved the Universe three times, and the world's smartest infant. it has everything, from oppessive ureaucrats to a cat that walks through walls, and a foul-mouthed parrot. The best parts take place on Key West, Florida - 'nuff said.

Robinson's first book in the Callahan series, the novel opens with a chapter originally written as a short story. Each chapter is a curious moment captured at a bar that seems to have a strange magnetism for the distraught, downhearted, empathic and downright unearthly. As always, Robinson's magnificent wit and pun-ability shine through, especially when given such apropos openers as Pun Day at the pub and Tall Tale night. Pay close attention to the chapter titles and keep an open mind about language use as you may dig up more witticisms than you might think at first glance. Callahan's Crosstime Saloon is a moving, intelligent read about a great bar with regulars that, over time, become more family than friends, and visitors that range from the out-of-body to the out-of-this-world.

If you've never read Spider's first compilation of Callahan and the people in his world, you're missing out on a masterpiece of story-telling. This purchase was my 3rd or 4th. Seems whenever I would lend it out, it never made it's way back to me. The stories are still relevent now as they were all those years ago when Spider first wrote them. Thank god for that little known publisher who had the foresight to include a few of the tales in his scifi rag-mag. ;}

Brilliant collection of short stories, that will appeal to everyone, not just sci-fi nuts
