This is a very impressive, well-researched work that will prove of interest especially to Kentuckians who are into the history of the commonwealth as well as to people who just enjoy place names and what they can reveal to us. My one reservation about this book (which is why I didn't give it five stars) is that the pronunciation key does not distinguish between the so-called long-i sound and the short-o sound. In other words, the two vowels of a name like Pine Knot are given the same phonetic rendering, but though Kentuckians and other southerners do reduce the long-i to the initial part of the diphthong, they definitely do not fail to distinguish it from the short-o.
One more comment, concerning one of the other reviews here. Stop, Kentucky, was not so named because the road stops there. The road most certainly does not. I know this because my family is from just east of there. The name was chosen because the postmaster at Mt. Union was given limited choices of the names he could choose for the local post office in the early 20th century. This is how, for example, Rector's Flat, to the east of Stop, got a post office name Murl, where one of my grandparents was the postmaster.
