Preventive Defense: A New Security Strategy for America Hardcover – January 1, 1999

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

A former secretary and assistant secretary of defense under Clinton divide threats into those to US survival, of which they see none now; to US interests, as in the Persian Gulf and Korean peninsula; and to US security, as in the former Yugoslavia and parts of Africa. They propose pro-active approaches to keep potential threats from developing into real ones. Perhaps to establish their credentials, they include photographs of themselves in various famous situations. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

This is a quick read about how American Defense has to change from the Cold War strategy to deal with other types of threats. I just returned from Europe and heard from European friends about their feelings on the United States. We are highly respected and looked up to as "the" power. We need to deal with the rest of the world accordingly. The authors give us some ideas as to how to do this.

I ordered this book immediately when Carter was appointed as Chuck Hagel's replacement. Hagel was somewhat of a joke, a shill who was given the job because he's Republican and could be later ridiculed. Carter, on the other hand, is a bureaucratic wonk who blabs endlessly about making the Pentagon more like a business than a government agency - duh ! With a father who owned a job shop that did work mostly for Hughes, and later abandoned "military" work altogether for a company that made machines to manufacture car parts, I know a lot about being a machinist and how many ways the corrupt corporations fleece the public while starving the shops who do the projects that seem impossible.

Carter's a liberal, but his early advocacy for buying commercial off the shelf hardware for military usage has real merit. Now if we could just convince his current boss to stop hollowing out the military...
